You don’t even know how. It all happened so fast. All of a sudden your life changed. All you know is that your father – The king, Warst ‘the good’ Forster – sent you away to this god forsaken outpost. When you arrived you heard that your father was killed in battle. The only thing you thought about at that moment was revenge. But your loyal adviser held you back and told you.
“No sire you mustn’t. Don’t you see it’s a trap?”
“But I have to go old friend. It’s my father, your king that has been killed.”
“But my lord…”
“No I will ride out and meet those evil creatures who killed the king.”
“… But my lord YOU are the king now.”
‘He was right. You have to live. You had to regain control over you country. You must ride to your castle. The strongest castle in the country. They could never take it. They must not take it.’
As you are thinking a scout runs into the outpost.
“Sire I bear word for you”
“Speak. Is it bad or good?”
“Bad sire. Duc de Puce one of the traitors knows there are loyal troops in this area and has sent a small force to destroy this outpost. They must not give away our position.”
“Is there more news?”
“Yes sire. It seems that the enemy has completely infiltrated our ranks save the royal bodyguards. And even worse…”
The story continues in-game
there are several objectives in this mission. I reccomend that you build your economy as fast as possible.
Summary- Overall score 3.1
This is a nice little scenario. It is short and fun to play. If you want a nice quick game with eco goals that won’t stress you too much then this one is for you.
Playability: 3.5 – Good.
Positives: I enjoyed carving out space for farms in the woods. Once cleared the flat valley floor provided plenty space to feed my economy and help me reach the economic goals. Fighting off the wolves was fun.
Negatives: Some of the limitations were annoying, such as not being able to build wooden wall. (However this did add a wee bit of challenge. I think there would have been other ways to add challenge though.) See also Map Design below.
Balance: 3.0 – Average.
Won on first time on Hard setting. I was never really troubled. A time limit would have boosted the challenge considerably.
Creativity: 3.0 - Average.
Positives: The story was good (see below for why I only scored it 3 overall).
The author made use of restrictions at the market and in build options to provide challenge.
Negatives: There was very little done to brighten up the simple grow-your-village- and-meet-your-goals scenario.
Map Design: 3.0 – Average
Positives: A nice forest. Good use of trees and bushes. The marsh around the signpost was good.
Negatives: Not much was made of the landscape. Also, I referred to the restrictions earlier e.g. no wall building. If there had been something in the story to justify this that would have been ok (but there wasn’t). There was some lack of attention to detail in what could be done e.g. xbows could be made but not sold nor could leather armour be made as tanner were not on the menu. Wells could be build but were not needed.
Story/Instructions 3.0 – Overall Average
Actually the story on the site DL description page (and in the Word file in the zip) is a good one. It sets the scene well. However, there is no story at all in the in-game story pane. For me that is always a serious omission. The score here would be more if there was something in-game for any player who loads up the map without the Word file or web site on hand.
