I think this map is one of the best i have done and i really hope you have fun playing it.
After defeating the Rat and taking his castle, the Snake is very upset that you killed his brother. He has asked for the help of the Pig and Wolf who are the top war fighters in the lands, these are the guys you will have to finish off in the long run to rid the lands of their mischief and cruelty! They are all heading to the Kings main castle in the hilltops, this is a Main Mining Camp that all of our resourses come from and if it falls, our kingdom will fall. We are giving you command of the castle and food will not be a problem, as our traders have bought enough to get you through the battles that lay ahead. You must not fail.
-----------------------------------
Tips:
-Use everything you can to defend the castle, everything
-At the start try to use a slow speed to get everything up and running
-If the opposing armies get ladders on the walls, you will have problems.
-----------------------------------
***Update***
- I have changed minor things in the maps scripting, one of which is the invasions. They will be slightly smaller, and i have added one extra year at the beginning to make it easier to get your defences up and running! (I done this for the less experienced players that don't need to put it to easy to beat this mission.) |

Hi, yes, I beat the initial version on hard. Spared all the pitch ditches and the melees for the final invasion. Cause the attackers split up and fasten onto different sections of the walls they can be killed before they become aware and walk to a breach in the wall. When food runs finally out and people leave the castle you get the high fear factor bonus for free :).
Nice, intricated mountain castle with curved and diagonal constructions. Also the "lowered" towers outside look strong. Some blind spots force you to move your marksmen around.
In the review to mission V I suggested you could shape the land finer. Let me repeat this issue. It's convincing to have a lot of marsh nect to the rivers. Perhaps not as plump clusters. You succeded with the southeastern slope and the stones there on the surface.

Playability: 5
This is a kind of map that I most love. The playability in this scenario is perfect. I simply have no words.
Ussualy, the hard maps are boring and you can be lazy to re-play them if you lose from the first tries... but in this case, the word "bored" does not exist. Only "enjoy" and "fun"... when you are eradicated from those lands. No bugs on map. I think playtesting this scenario for you semeed fun.
The way how events are used is very interesting: The traveling fair, makes you rise gold to stregth yourself and to repair the damaged castle after some waves of enemies. On the other side, is tree fungus, which is lowing your the neccesarly supplies of wood.
My castle economy worked quite well. Having the fear factor on +5 and the food suplies on +4 at the beggining, my taxes rarely goes under 'mean'. And If you add the traveling fair, the result is a lot of money. With all of this, my damaged castle required some improvements time to time, after invasions.
No bugs.
Bravely done with playability!
Balance: 4.5
Beating this map was a hard try for me. At beggining from first try it seemed "easy". It was a peaceful smell in my keep so I avoid to go somewhere else. I was satisfied only with the economy.... And big mistake it was. After some passed time, the invasions shows their face. Beating the snake was quite fun but then, the pig and wolf made me black days. I lost.
Seeing that those invasions from enemy aren't a joke, I restarted the mission. I fastly got my economy running and bringing some heavy warriors (swordsmen). Then I've placed some weapon buildings to get the weapon production running. So I trained some crossbows and archers and half of them I put on walls and half on towers. Then I bought a lot of engineers. Some of them I made oil turner (that unremembered name) and with the rest I made shields. Lots of shields. Placed them on towers, walls and gatehouses. When the war charged on my castle, I was ready.
Like so I did with the updated version. On the other (the first one) I hardly won from the 3rd try. Notice that all tries were on 'hard' mode.
Creativity: 4.5
The idea behind this map is very original. After conquesting the Rat's castle, the other enemies from SH1 wants to eradicate you. The map design is excelent - I think this took to you a while. No words - the creativity is met in the entire map design, from the castle to the marsh. Also, the imagination sets under your interesting and original events.
The startiong troops and their position at beginning is very nice. Makes you think that no one will disturb this tiny castle. But what a pity that the story is a bit basic - Otherwise I would give you a 5.0
Map Design: 4.0
The map design is very complex. The map has everywhere diferent tipes of grass (and not randomly placed) ,stones, trees and bushes. It is amazing the way how the marsh is conected to the rivers and that sea from the North.
All points from the map looked very realistic and very wild. Personaly I didn't like very much that mountain plan from the South-Vest of the map because it looks a bit strange but in rest is avesome.
Story/Instructions: 3.5
The story is a bit basic but still good. It would deserve more. My question is why you don't make the story better if you know that the map made by you is excelent?... eh?
Additional Comments:
Avesome map. It really is your best 'till now. Keep making them.

Thanks for the review, yeah i know i really got to work on the story a little, but i'm really bad at that stuff, i almost failed english class cause of it haha. And yes the story is relatively the same as the main campaigne for that same reason. I love to make my missions pretty hard even on normal, just the thought of a challenge. |

Played the updated version on very hard and was highly rewarded. Can heartily agree with the strong points and fine observations LoH made in his review.
Within the small core of the installation there's so much you can re-build. Hovels next to the stockpile, well well! Had to be cautious no to get too high a population. Became familiar with the castle.
The land around is wild and ful of resources (except for cultivating). As inside you the player can lay different emphasis on what people should work in the precious time.
And then: the huge invasions. Already the first troops of the Snake. Was hard work to stop the swarms of raiding maces avoiding thme from smashing the infrastructure. What if you have a wonderful trap and the guys take another way? (It deserved some testing: which objects do maces aim first, second etc.?)
From the Pig and the Wolf it were the tough pikes that caused me most trouble. They walk faster in Stronghold 1 than in Crusader. Swords instead can be overtaken by an oil bearing engineer and dealt with. Many of of them died in the mace of wooden traps in the inner ward.
On this level the mission is nothing of sitting'n waiting. Great action gameplay at all sides of the fortress. Wonderful map.
(Perhaps, with many of us playing advanced and tricky style, there should be two versions of a map sometimes. One for common style and one with differently shaped invasions that counter certain tactics. Gonna open a thread) |
