Castle Marksen

Author File Description
bobT aka Bob Taylor
File Details
Map Size: 300x300 (Medium)
Difficulty: Normal

Lord Marsen has taken it upon himself to claim all of the lands east of the sea. Not only has he determined that this land is his, he has ordered that the rivers be dammed and that no peasant outside of his domain be allowed to live.
It is now up to you to remove the Lord from his thrown and take back the rich lands surrounding Castle Marksen. The only way that will be possible is to siege the castle and remove the Lord once and for all.
Using a small group of men with high skills will be your only method of attack. Be careful and take your time and Castle Marksen will be yours.

Playability: As is usual with this author, playability is very good. This siege kept my interest throughout. Well designed, carefully thought out, smooth gameplay and certainly winnable.

Balance: I like the limited number of troops you are provided with in order to siege Castle Marksen. This really does add to gameplay IMO, and the combination of your troops compared to those defending the castle, along with the other defences you have to face, is about perfect. It's a scenario that can tax you if you don't observe what you need to achieve. There is one route in (unless I have missed something, bobT?) and this adds to the overall playability as well. Why? Well, there are a couple of things you have to negotiate before you reach the keep, namely the cleverly placed round tower (use trebs) and the pitch ditches just inside the castle. I don't like to see vast areas of ground with pitch, unless the scenario is specifically designed to incorporate this, but Marksen is a fairly typical siege and the level of pitch use is good. I usually sacrifice a few troops to see where the pitch is laid down. It's an onstacle that can ruin your plans, bearing in mind your troop numbers are low. The enemy are strategically placed, you don't have much choice but to fight them. Great stuff overall in this area.

Creativity: Simple point, but the castle is built on low level and surrounded on two sides by higher ground. Not a defensive position, you might think, but the terrain works against you, to great effect, maintaining the task of sieging the castle. I like this idea, it works very well. Story, creativity and map design are of above average standard, in fact very good overall.

Map Design: As I have mentioned, the terrain modelling is key to how this map is played. Whilst it's not the very best I have seen, it is a natural looking landscape that has been put together extremely well, save a few areas of lower land where brush strokes can be seen. The castle is excellent, though, and viewed from above via the minimap, is extremely well thought out.

Story/Instructions: Suits the map design, map design suits the story.. hard to fault, really. Clear story here, combined with a minimap in the downloads description page (always nice to see). Ensure you play as an attacker, as requested.

In summary: I have yet to play a map from bobT that I didn't like, or thought bad of. This is a well put together siege, plenty to do, plenty to think about and certainly worth a download. You are almost guaranteed a good map from bobT, and this is no exception. Great designer, great map!

This siege is a little different from many others and I had a good time playing it. Storming the castle is out of the question as you have a limited number of troops to begin with. Patience and planning are the key to this map.

I rated this map a 4 straight across the board. The designer did a very good job on all aspects of this map without going overboard. The castle was well designed and laid out with enough detail in the rest of the map to be pleasing to the eye. I found the map to be challenging, but not overly so.

I would have given this map a 5 for playability or balance(not sure which) if it wasn't for a small problem. A group of swordsmen near the keep should have been on the keep IMHO, or else on an agressive stance. They simply stood there as my troops marched past to the keep. If they had engaged me, I would not have won so easily.

Other than this small glitch, I found this to be a very well made scenario. Well thought out, it makes you think first and is great for those who want a change from massive multi-front assaults or clickfests. It's well worth your time.
