If you like a massive hand to hand battle, this map is for you. If you have a slow computer though, you may want to look elsewhere. This map is my take on Phrozen's Gladiator and credit should go to him for the original concept.
You are a Tribune in command of a Roman cohort and you have been ordered to make camp and fortify a position overlooking an important river ford. Before the camp can be completed though, a massive force of Gauls descends upon you. You order the men into position to defend the partially completed camp as best you can. Can you stop them?
Note: This map has been tested and tweaked to be a good challenge on the hard level. Other difficulty levels are not recommended but can be played. Also, this map is an invasion map that plays as a siege and will show up in the invasion list of the game with the designation - (a siege) in the title. For those who get crushed by the Gauls too many times, a winning strategy is supplied in the readme.
I hope you have as much fun playing this map, as I did in creating it. Good luck and let me know what you think of it.
PS: This is the final revision that improves the look of the original map and the difficulty is near what it was in the original. It is a little tougher to hold your ground in the first attack but the balance is still there. If you think the map too difficult, I defend it by saying this. First, it plays out quickly. You don't spend 2 hours just to find out you lost. Second, you can learn from your mistakes and see where the enemy presses the hardest or where the macemen are more concentrated. You might play half a dozen times before you beat it, but only an hour or so will have passed.

A very fun map. Lots of death, good layout, challenge, etc. I recommend this map.
Playability: This map was extremely fun. You could try a huge number of tactics in order to defeat a huge number of enemies. It was full of action, and had great use of cinematics.
Balance: I personally found it a but hard.
Creativity: It was based on a previous map, so it doesn't score too high in originality. It also didn't deviate much from the "Castle on one side of the river, signpost on other side" routine.
Map design: It was a great map with effective use of eye candy tricks and skilled terrain design, but there was nothing spectacular to deserve a 5.
Story: It had a good, informative story which tied in well with the map. There were also full outgame instructions.
All in all, a very good map. If I would change one thing, it would be to disable all the buildings. |

Playability: This is a great map, short but sweet, with one of those staged battles that seem to work so well in Stronghold. Very addictive, partly because playing on Hard is just that... very difficult to beat, but it has kept me interested. I keep going back to it to see if I can improve on the shocking troop loss I experienced!
Balance: I was tempted to give this 3 because I too felt it was extremely difficult. However, a few more attempts and I seemed to get the hang of what is required and in retrospect I think the balance is okay, but definitely leans on the hard side. Still, I played again before submitting this review and was crushed! It's a difficult challenge, be warned, but you'll keep coming back for more!
Creativity: In line with the previous review, the idea stems from a similar map by a different author and Ouly has commented on this to his credit. It's well thought out though with enough change to make it fairly refreshing to play.
Map Design: Whilst there isn't much of a castle to look at, i'm not going to mark this review down as a result. This is all about the landscape and a few small pieces of eye candy. Generally the map is well done and is perfectly suitable for the story and theme of the map. Good attempt.
Story/Instructions: Very well done I thought. Time and effort have gone into this and the hints and tips at the bottom of the read-me included in the zip should be regarded as vital to anyone who isn't having much success!!
In summary, I heartily recommend this map. There aren't any bad areas here at all, it's a basic scenario, a good map design and should be played on this basis. This map will play slower on lower spec machines, as the author has wisely pointed out, but I don't think this will cause too many concerns. This is a cracking map, Ouly, and to others out there I recommend this for those moments when all you want to do is smash a few skulls!! |

Thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate it. I had really hoped to intercept this map before it was available for download because it wasn't really finished. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I submitted it. I had intended to add much more detail and a revision is just around the corner. I never expected anyone to review this before the revised version, and I get 2 reviews in 1 day!!
I tried to make this map a good challenge but one that I could win everytime on hard. By the sounds of it, I think I accomplished my goal. I was afraid it would be too easy. You may be surprised at how easy it really is to beat if you follow my strategy in the readme.
To anyone interested in this map: Download it if you like, it really does play quite well, but a revision is in the works that improves the look of the map 10 fold and (dare I?) adds to the challenge. Fear not, a detailed walkthrough is included in the readme for those who experience too many defeats. |
