Betrayal! Civil war reigns in the kingdom. The Red banner of the High King flies on two keeps. One is for the true King whom you serve; one for the cruel usurper whom you fight. You have set up a temporary war camp West of the Red castle. You have the king’s entire treasure at your disposal, and must use it wisely! Indeed you must raise a large host to storm the usurper’s castle. There are also armies of traitors abroad in the land, sworn to destroy you and your King. You must resist them while you prepare your assault. Beware! All wear the red livery of the Kingdom!
Your goals are as follow: 1. Survive all invasions
2. Raise a sizable army of armored troops. (My choice of 200 swordsmen and 45 crossbows or your chosen equivalent) 3. Storm the castle and kill the false king.
Aaaaah! One thing more, my liege! Local people claim there are TUNNELS in the mountains, East of the Red Fortress. They say they lead right into the castle. If you could find these tunnels, you would save much time and the lives of many of the king’s faithful. Fight! And may the angels of war ride with you!
- Protect your King or all is lost. (You cannot raise stone walls in the open fields)
- Defend the war camp until you are ready to assault the castle. (Perhaps crossbows and swordsmen as well as wild macemen from the local tribes)
- Find the TUNNELS in the mountains.
- You need upwards of 170 swordsmen (or the equivalent) to attack through the tunnels.
If you choose to take the castle through the main gate you will need a traditional army of melee, missile and siege troops. Victory will come more slowly and many widows will cry alone through the winter nights.
Beware! The invasions will keep coming, but your sources of revenue are limited.

Playability: Be warned, this map is far too much fun! I have played this a number of times now and I still don't tire of it. Perfectly made, it's a real challenge with lots of invasions to keep you on your toes. I had failed a number of times before getting the hang of it, so please read the hints section, it's the only way to tackle this map. If you ride out the initial invasions, you will do well. Make use of the huge treasury and the weapons that can be bought at the market, and recruit fast!
Balance: I found this map incredibly difficult initially, but bear with it and you will enjoy an extremely well thought out scenario that tests your skills. The key to winning this map is recruitment of troops. It's not easy getting through the back entrance to the enemy castle and you will suffer high troop losses as a result.
Creatvity: I loved this map from the moment I played it. It's a great idea, though not unique to the forum, but the 5 score goes to the way it has been set up and the overall design. Great stuff.
Map Design: The landscape here is extremely dark and evil looking. More functional than appealing, but the brooding fortress you have to siege is very well portrayed. If I could offer any advice here, it would be to work a little on the castle walls which are a little rough and ready in some places, but that's all.
Story/instructions: Proof that quality over quantity rules the day. You have sufficint detail here but it's the way the author has presented the introduction that appeals to me. Letting the imagination flow can result in a description that does nothing but absorb you and entice you to play.
In summary, I really do rate this map for what it is, an all-out attack on a castle with invasions to keep you on your toes. Watch your back, and don't wait to set up an economy here. Judging when to attack will be your biggest challenge to succeed. Time it well and you will relish the challenge. Great map, JP, and recommended to anyone out there thinking of downloading. Good fun, lots of fighting... from someone who prefers building to destruction! Can't be bad...
RED KINGS ROCKS!! P&B) Skillfully designed. Well thought out. Skill-testing difficulties well rewarded in the end. C) Exciting and imaginative, the author's own enjoyment is evident throughout. MD) Well done. Appropriate mood. More details possible. S/I) Commanding presentation and delivery. Superb!
