The Castle of Diósgyõr, which has an important role among the monuments of Hungary, is
situated at the foot of the Bükk mountains in a beautiful natural environment, 8 kilometres from the
centre of Miskolc. The Castle’s „golden age” was in the 14th century when the King Louis the Great
of the Anjou House had it built as a magnificent gothic royal castle. From the time he came to the
throne of Poland, as well, he had been spending several months of a year in the Castle with his
entire royal court, half way between Cracow and Buda. After his death, the Castle of Diósgyõr
became the Queens’ engagement gift and provincial residence. That is why it was widely known as
„The Queens’ Castle”.
