A Hot Summer Day

Objectives: 400 bread, no enemy and invasions left
Difficulty: Normal
Mini story: You own a small castle near the seashore. To encourage more people to come to your settlement you must raise food production, bread in particular, because it is the most valuable food type in this lush (but rare) oasis. However, some local raiders find your expanding castle a tempting target and will constantly attack your castle town. It is up to you to seize the day (Carpe diem)!
Notes: I challenged myself to create a short, fun mission in a single day. So, there's not much of a story, but I've playtested the map several times and it should be about normal difficulty. If you have any suggestions or recommendations, please comment below.
Thanks, and enjoy!
UPDATE #1: Lowered objectives from 400 bread to 190 bread.
UPDATE #2: Raised objectives back to 400 bread, disabled stone trading.

wow the castle looks very good and original.
I have one mention for the design: Those single dots of grass on the desert doesn't really blend well as their square shape is a bit visible.
Edit: I played the map and I had a lot of fun defending the small castle. Not a very hard scenario. Though, it's a pity the gameplay is a bit too short.
I have another mention, this time concerning the gameplay - The stone trading should be disabled. Destroying the towers and some walls gives a healthy amount of stone so an extra gold for the player and makes the map easier... and the castle look ugly.[Edited on 06/22/11 @ 05:30 PM]

Hey LoH, thanks for the comment :)
I'll make some changes and update the file.
~
The current version is the original version that I uploaded, with 400 bread as objectives. I updated the file a few hours ago but it will take some time for it to be approved, that is the version with objectives at 190 bread. I'll update one more time after that.[Edited on 06/22/11 @ 07:10 PM]

Although made in just one day, this was such a fun map I could not avoid giving it a review. It proved to be an excellent scenario.
Playability: 5
Despite the quite short gameplay, just a couple of years, the player will be kept busy most of the time by the invasions and the fear of not getting the supplies in time. This map can mainly be described as simple, a basic layout and terrain, basic story and idea and yet it was incredible fun to play it. It proved to be a very entertaining map and it can be replayed over and over again as well, not likely to be bored too soon and that's probably partially because of the short gameplay. But anyway, a very unique feeling and atmosphere overall.
Balance: 5
Combining strong invasions with a quite big economical request will certainly lead to a hard map, as both military and eco skills are required. The map is not ridiculously hard but not that easy either and that's why I think the author achieved a perfect balance. Hiring troops while being attacked will prove challenging, as the peasants will get shot all the time, and the peaceful times will also be quite busy, with eco tasks and gold needed for more soldiers.
My own strategy was based mainly on masses of slingers because the enemy melee troops were dieing slow just with a couple of archers, and it worked well enough to defeat the invasions. The eco request is tricky to achieve and a working industry needs to be set from the beginning.
Creativity: 4
The scenario proved to have many creative aspects, in the map design area especially. The castle itself is an original creation, as well as the small wild beach with rocks here & there, looking excellent in the same time. The stockpile in the beach surrounded by normal ground so it has a better look is something that I appreciate too and I consider creative.
The story is however the area where the scenario lacked in quality and so It lacked in creativity as well. Not many original aspects were present there and that's the main reason for giving a 4.
Map Design: 4.5
As I mentioned earlier, the map has a simplistic design, but that doesn't mean it's not natural. On the contrary, the map design is very realistic. For a small-sized map it has many details and the sea to beach to desert cross was incredibly natural designed. Made in just a day, the author has clearly shown a high level of terrain skills, being a veteran designer. The castle was also beautiful and it looked like a real desert castle.
On the other hand, what kept me from giving a perfect mark is the plain desert areas, where single dots of grass were placed, and that gave a quite obvious square shape view. And we all know the grass is not growing in groups with straight edges. The same thing is present at the contact of stones with the sea, as dots of beach gives a less natural view, with straight borders and 90 degrees corners of sand. I know the editor is limited, but a better work could have been done. Altough I went in details with this aspect, it was enough to take only 0,5 out of the score.
Story/Instructions: 3
The story is not very detailed and kind of short, a small effort, enough only to give an average mark.
Additional Comments:
Not bad at all for such a fast-made map. I'm looking forward to playing your future maps. |

The big map image(panorama) can be done by making individual screen shots of all map and paste them together in a program like Paint or Photoshop. |
