This is my second installation of Sir longarm's adventures where he must hold of the Bear and defeat as much of his army as possible.
His castle is a small wooden keep enclosed by two gatehouses which are lightly protected. The best thing to do is kill the Bear's archers and send spearmen to destroy the catapults before they do too much damage.
I havn't recently uploaded any maps because I am juggling between my LOTR campaign, Stronghold 2/Crusader and my exams. I hope to upload alot more maps during the summer.
Please comment or review my map, would be really appreciated.
Edit: Forgot to mention, full story, pictures and map are inside the zip file. |

On normal difficulty, it's very easy. I had around 60 archers and 40 spearmen by the end of the mission. The economy is harder to manage however, because of the limited space for farms. I had to balance between half rations + small bribe, and normal rations. I sold iron to raise gold to hire more archers and spearmen, but quickly ran out of gold.
I'll comment more after I try the map on VH difficulty, later. |

Playability: 2.5
I downloaded and played the map, just to see if you have improved during the past half year, and I have to say I was disappointed. The gameplay was at a very low level, there were too many things that kept the entertainment away from the map. First, the map was very boring, by this I mean there were no events, only a fire event, but it couldn't damage my economy as I had many wells, also my buildings were well separated. There were only two invasions, and both of them were weak, 60 archers were profusely enough to fend off the last invasion on all difficulty levels. The settlement was very easy to defend with the outer gate and some lines of wooden walls before it, I destroyed the inner fortress as it was really unnecessary and also slowered the economy. The second big issue was the spamming of thievery events, it was extremely frustrating, not because it damaged my food production, but because its monthly appearing annoyed me, I had to turn off the sound.
Balance: 2.5
As the gameplay, the balance was bad too, as I've said the mission was too easy, and everything was to the player's advantage, the area was perfect to set up an inpenetrable defence and the 43 iron ores in the beginning were enough to get a lot of money fast, and train a lot of soldiers and buy some food. I still stick to my opinion that playtesting could solve all these problems and thus you could made the gameplay and balance much much better.
Creativity: 3.5
I rate creativity based on all aspects of the map, from the originality to story, gameplay, etc. The idea of the map - and all the campaign is really good. I never ever seen any maps based on Sir Longarm's adventures, so the story is original (read more below), it is also a good idea to use the map of France as the campaign map, as -like the map of England - it has a typical Stronghold feeling. However it doesn't look really spectacular and the movement of Sir Longarm is hard to follow, as the black line conencting the dots has no arrow showing from where to where did our hero go and since I palyed the first map a very long time ago, I don't know what was the starting point. Let's continue to the mission. It wasn't very original as my only task was to fend off two weak invasions, a typical boring invasion scenario, however the hideout of the palyer was in fact very original, I rarely see maps where the player has the Environment itself as his/her stronghold, this was cool and interesting, however improved nothing on the gameplay, sadly. Anyway, I gave a 3.5 here, which means the creativity of the map is over the average.
Map Design: 3.5
Very good map design, still needs a lot of improvements, but very good. The concept of having the surrounding mountains as the hideout is a good ideas as I mentioned above. However it also gave all advantages to the player and made the construction of an impenetrable defence easily possible, maybe little, secret passage could make the design more interesting and the playability better - and more fun. The map misses a lot of detail though, the cliffs would look much better and the overall design would look more natural, if the author spent more time with design... much more time, but I have to tell it is not far from excellent.
Story/Instructions: 2.5
A quite nice and short story supports the map, however there are not enough informations about the map itself, only a line in the end, most of it is about the other feudal lords and siege, which is not clear enough to understand. A 2.5 seems a fair score here. Btw not a bad attempt at recreating Sir Longarm's story about rescueing the king.
Additional Comments:
Honestly, this scenario was a disappointment for me, mostly because the playability. I already told you everything in my previous reviews how to improve, and if you choose to update the map, I will happily re-review it, and hopefully the feedback will be much better. |

Actually I agree with you on this one, I was very lazy on this map and I think I uploaded it to get rid of it to be honest. I am already two maps ahead of this because I've been working on them for ages and I promise you they will be 10 times better.
Btw, took alook at the next maps and you should be expecting more of those terrain built strongholds. [Edited on 07/10/11 @ 06:30 AM]
