The Joy of Mapmaking
Today I watched an episode of "The Joy of Painting", and as usual Bob Ross was doing what he does best - create a detailed painting in just a half hour! So I though, could I do a reasonably detailed skirmish map in a half hour too? Well, it took about 32.5 minutes....almost haha!
This video also showcases how to easily and automatically make some nice looking ruins using towers and mangonels.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Play skirmish map as either 2 on 1, or a FFA. Enjoy!

lol... Creating detailed paintings in half an hour? Talk about skills.
The map somehow reminds me of "Double Visions" |

Well the details aren't perfect if we look closer but admittedly it's an impressive overall work giving the little time. Great job! |

Lol yeah Mr. Ross was the man! The guy could paint a mountain in 2 minutes and make it look so easy. He was a soft-spoken inspiration. RIP Bob

Surajsubba, Thanks for noticing. It's great someone would remember a little map I made from so long ago. There's definitely a resemblance between the two, but this one should play better even if it's not so detailed.
Lord_of_Hell, yes, it was for the most part a frantic pace! I wish I could spend at least another hour fine-tuning it, but that would defeat the concept of the map. I'm happy I could just finish it in that amount of time :D
I'm glad you liked the map HeroLord, I look forward to the review, Jt989.

Playability: 4
Overall, the map was one of the best 3 player maps ive ever played. With that in mind, the A.I. tends to build their stone/iron mines away from their castles instead of on the deposits nearest them. otherwise, a very good map in playability.
Balance: 4.5
This map is a very good definition of a "handicapped" map, or a 2 on 1. It seemed that each side had about the same oasis. I thought that the right should have more, so i only took off 0.5 for that.
Creativity: 4
This is a very cool map. Its hard to belive you did it in 32 minutes. I like the ruins alot, i will use your methods for my future maps if i need to make ruins, and for that, i thank you
Map Design: 4.5
This was a original design, but it looks like an earlier map you have done, so I only took off 0.5 for that.
Story/Instructions: 5
Great background as to your inspiration. R.I.P. Bob Ross

I would like to comment once more just to express my feeling towards the creativity of the map.
Aside from any other map which we generally we see these days, this one marks a rather different impression on us all. Creating a detailed map within that amount of time frame really pushes the boundaries. And the map really stands to the idea. My honest rating for creativity would be a "5" & for design a "4" for the map.
On other notes; i had never noticed any of Ross's work before. But after going thru a few of the vids posted on the web, it reminded me of an episode on "Family Guy" where Peter was following Ross's work. He was an incredible artist. RIP...
I would like to see more of your maps. |
