In the middle of the 17th century Obersteinbrunn lost like all castles its political and militaric importance.
But not alike most of other castles, it wasn’t given up and inhabited by common people till 1842. There uprising nationalists stormed Obersteinbrunn and destroyed its fortifications, setting a sign against the former rulership of the hated Order.
1933 archaeological excavations found old weapons and household objects.
1966 the castle was partly repaired and opened for the public.
