Carnage Arena
When playing human opponents, this is a balanced 4-player map, or an extremely unbalanced 5 player map.
Although this map should be fine for multi-player purposes, it was made for testing new AIVs with the least possible human interference.
All resources are present, but it seems that the AI's are reluctant to build pitch rigs. (See update below)
The human player place him-/herself in the center of the map, and the (up to) 4 AI(V)s - that is going to be monitored - in the remaining slots. I usually test 2 vs. 2 (like 2 allied Wolfs vs. 2 allied Saladins, both with either random or pre-selected AIVs).
When the game starts, the human player disposes of all earthly wealth, disband the troops, and wait to be annihilated. It usually doesn't take that long.
When the human player is out of the game, the AIs can slug it out on their own without "any" human interference. Now, the player doesn't have to think about survival or any other game altering activity, but can focus entirely on the joint AI and AIV capabilities and behaviors.
All of the "FireFly" AIVs should fit on this map, but NO guarantee! :-)
With this map, I've had some stunning outcomes of matches between some of the "FireFly" AIVs, all depending on the game variables. For example, in "Crusader play" with max. advantage to the AIs (8000 gold), the Wolfs usually get their collective as... kicked by the Wazirs!!! Also, it seems that Saladin is the "de facto" ruler amongst AIs!
Have fun!

about the pitch rigs, they might only build them on swamp+oil, not on pure oil terrain. |

Well, I had the same idea, so before publishing I changed the "border" of the area to swamp, but still no difference. So, it may not have been enough of a change?
It's rare that I see AIs build pitch rigs, but the pig builds one in my custom AIV skirmish map "Four Infidels", even though he can't utilize the pitch (apart from selling it, as the pig does not recruit archers, only x-bowmen), or have I missed something? |

After some vigorous testing I've found, that the AIs need an area consisting of at least 13 squares of swamp, where at least 3 of these should contain oil, to be able to build a pitch rig. Also, there are rules to the (swamp/pitch) layout of this area. This is atypical requirements for a raw material production site in SHC, but interesting!
Overall, the AIs have a harder time "finding" raw materials on which to build their production sites (need larger areas of dedicated raw materials than human players).
Anyway, I've now updated the map, and the AIs are now able to build pitch rigs (changed an extra "layer" of oil-squares to swamp).
Thanks you for leading me on track! |

No problem. I lately had the same problem on an own testing map, that's why I knew that the swamp-amount between the oil matters.
By the way, i was surprised to see that 1 Caliph can place up to 10 (!) pitch rigs, given the necessary amount of swamp/oil. |

Yes, lots of (surprising) stuff still to be discovered in this "little" game. Keep diggin'! |

Indeed.
Both, SHC (with ai behaviour and especially aiv files) and SH1 (with all its editor tricks and especially the applications of the magic eraser) are still fascinating.

I found a alot of interesting results by doing an ai vs ai battle in these map. For example, Lionheart will almost always loose against the arabian ai(except the sultan!). And somehow, Wazir even manage to beat even frederick, lionheart and wolf! But it only took 2 Saladins around 15ish minute to bea 2 Wazirs! I do agree that Saladin is the de facto ruler of all ai. Wazir is number 2 in my opinion but the gap between them are too far. And Lionheart is not as strong as we would've thought. He can somehow handle european lord really well(except frederick and wolf). But those arabian ai are really his kryptonite. Same goes for frederick. He can't beat arab ai except sultan and probably caliph. And somehow, if frederick put his engginers guild outside and were destroyed by enemy catapult, it will meant doom for him. Sometimes it will destroyed but the trainingvground isnt which means he cant rebuild that(also happens sometimes to other ai even human but frederick is the whom is saw the most often)
A really great map if you wanted to see an ai behavior and experimenting against ai. Must have i must say
*all results were tested in a normal game with 8000 gold advantage for ai |
