Free the People (updated)

Author File Description
Passion
File Details
Map Size: 400x400 (Large)
Difficulty: Normal
This is a scenario in which you have begun encroaching upon another lord's lands. You must then strengthen your position and defend yourself against his retaliations. Finally, you must defeat the lord in his own castle. His fortifications are strong and and his anger is high. However, if his people can be convinced of your sincerity to lead them well, they just may join your cause!

I have updated this file to allow for more of a challenge and less repeat (thanks, Fleckdoc, for your input!). If you enjoyed the game, or think it could be improved, please post your comments, as I'm still learning the system and need all the help I can get!

The bottom line first: This is a well made game from top to bottom. Bravo, Laurie.

Playability: This speaks for itself. There are no mistakes to overlook while playing this one. The scenario script runs like a dream from event to event and it keeps you playing the whole while it's in front of you. Be ready to do a little clicking right from the start.

Balance: As an invasion script that asks the player to build up his forces and make an attack, the balance becomes a matter of choice. It's possible, for example to make several cumulative invasions and fight toward the goal of a victory "little by little", or a player can choose to make his assault an "all or nothing" event with a single mass invasion. The opposition is there in either case and both cases play equally well. But be forewarned... This script can easily catch you off your guard if you waste your efforts along the way.

Creativity: This is the most fun aspect to rating any map, in my opinion, since it asks the big question: "What's new?" In fact, expecting something unexpected from every map that one downloads would be to ask a little too much. The newness of this game script is in its use of nearly everything that the map editor has to offer... That's a surprise of a different kind and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Map Design: There is no doubt here that some considerable though went into building this playground. There are few dead spaces and unused corners on this one and a prospective player should plan to see the entire 300x300 field during his game play. Without the careful placement of the map's hills and water, swamps and woodlands, the game would have played quite differently, a fact you'll find out for yourself when you make an attempt on the castle walls. I can't complain much about the little bits of candy left lying about although I would have liked to see a few more bushes and brush here and there. But, it's all certainly pleasing enough to look at and the well positioned use of torture devices keeps to the story line perfectly.

Story/instructions: Here we have the magic of this scenario builder's imagination. The story is vividly presented and it invites the player to take up his role in an interesting and captivating way. The title, Free the People, offers a first strong hint of what the player can expect. Winning the game has an heroic feeling that goes right along with your victory.

The bottom line: This one is a 4.6 winner...try it!

Playability: 4

I’m not sure to be correct in playability, since under fleckdoc review influence before playing, I franticly start the map trying to do my best to raise a castle build missile troop to defend it and an offensive force to besiege the foe’s fortress. First I was a little surprised not to see a time limit, so I supposed that this limit will be overhelming invasions if I didn’t win enough quickly… It was a bit frightening because resources on the map were generous either in wood, grassland for farming, stone and iron. Back fire will probably be terrible… but months and years passed and nothing dangerous came. Toward the end I understand that I made a movie and winning was just a question of time. Well I think playability is really on the average. I had a lot of fun, except toward the end, but only because of my illusions about an hypothetical danger.
In an other matter event are fairly used to annoy/distract you, and at this time I was pleased to see for example that my preventive anti fire efforts were not a waste of time space and money.
Perhap it didn’t deserve more than 3

Balance: 1

The great weakness of this map : when first invasion occurs my castle was strong, completed, and garrison could match invasion outside the castle without problems. The invasion army was itself more a raiders groups than an army, and I feel even at very hard successives invasions will be far too weak to be a danger. Killing the enemy lord is as easy as to beat invasion. I just had to destroy a lone small tower to find a safe blind spot for build a treb and destroy a castle main tower. At that time the way open and using speed, a suicidary group of macemen, achieve to kill the lord before garrison could stop them. The map would have been great with a real time out and/or powerfull invasion acting as dead line. Actually winning the game is only a question of time, so it’s impossible to loose.

Creativity: 3

Good idea but sadly it miss a few to achieve in realisation.

Map Design: 4

fair decor, even it sometime appear too flat in my eyes, some empty spaces, but overall not an ugly map. Fair use of events.

Story/instructions: 4

above the average without doubt.

:’( It really miss a very few to this map.

Although the battles aren't too intense, I enjoyed working my way through this mission. The fires made life pretty tough, but with enough wells you could make it through. I liked that the invasions got progressivly more difficult, as this kept me on my toes. I would have liked to see a castle that was more difficult to attack and more difficult to defeat.

P.S. I don't know if I had the revised version though. :-)
