The Palace - Urban Warfare (updated)

Author File Description
Duke of York
File Details
Map Size: 300x300 (Medium)
Difficulty: Hard

Fellow Warriors! Thank you for downloading my scenario. I hope you have as much fun playing it as I have had creating it. I welcome feedback and would love to hear from you if you like or dislike this scenario.

The king is sick and on his deathbed without an heir. Rumors are spreading like wild fire that he is already dead. You, the Duke of York are the King’s first cousin and have a legitimate claim to the throne, but Lord Mobray (The Pig) also has a claim to the throne. Mobray’s forces have surrounded the palace and plan to starve you out. To bolster your claim to the throne and increase your popularity with the people of the city, your steward has advised you to hold a grand feast with food and drink for all. Mobray has gotten word of your scheme and will not sit by idly while you have custody of the King. He is not intending to wait for the King to die of natural causes and plans to help him along a little. If you get in his way, that would be even better! You must protect the King, break the siege and defend the palace from Mobray.

Pleasantness 3
Population 75
No enemy on the map

Important notes:

There are only 3 mills in the city. If they are destroyed, you will not be able to rebuild them. The same goes for the engineer’s workshop, once destroyed you will not be able to rebuild it. Hints are available if you email me at - enjoy!

Scenario Updated - changes are as follows:

1. Catapults and Trebuchets are disabled at the engineer's workshop
2. Stairs were increased in order to make the attack route of the enemy easier.

Thank you again for playing my scenario

Playability: 5/5. This is a very involving map that requires plenty of assessment before you choose your preferred path to victory. It's wonderfully playable and enjoyable, with some great events triggered with certain conditions to add a bit of spice to the scenario. It kept me interested all through the 5 or 6 times I have played it so far and everything seems to fit together smoothly.

Balance: 4/5. This map has three elements at play: invasions, existing enemy on the map (not too dissimilar to siege) and economics. Juggling the three can be hard and I opted to forget about the economics until close to the end. Your castle doesn't really get going until you can generate some breathing space for the apple farms to be harvested or for the mills to be freed from archer fire. It's a lot to do yet it's absorbing and never overly difficult. Balance is tricky to achieve and this swings from attack to defence to economics very well.

Creativity: 5/5. Studying the map in some detail, you can see just how difficult this must have been to create. Not the design or the eye candy, but the 'urban warfare' effect that the author wanted to achieve. To have a castle surrounded by smaller enemy structres and have your farmers, miller boys, etc shot at as they try to harvest food is very well done. It's clear that to progress you need to take out enemy positions and the whole schematic of the map seems to be geared towards this. Placement of troops is critical. The idea itself is very sound and brilliantly executed. This is a very good combination of three elements and you could argue is three in one. Excellent, refreshing and all very well thought out.

Map Design: 4/5. It's clear from the start that the work required to make this tick along is enormous. The map isn't a pretty terrain affair and looks more puzzle-based but this doesn't detract from the fact that it's a beautifully rendered map with some great eye candy thrown in but that never looks overly-produced. It's visually stunning.

Story/Instructions: 4/5. What a story should be. It's clear to understand, a good read and you even have a picture of the minimap to tempt you. It's always good to see that effort has been made into every area and the story/instructions round off the map perfectly.

IN SUMMARY: This surely must have something that appeals to most. Quality map design all round, and should be downloaded.

Wonderful wonderful mission. It was filled with many challenges. I really liked that there were come building limitations - not being able to build more mills was a great idea - though I didn't think so when my millers were getting shot down all the time. :-) The layout was really neat - I enojyed having to kill off the enemy on the sides in order to gain much needed resources. The only problem that I saw was that when the Pig's army came onto the map, they were stuck on that little island thing. They couldn't actually attack me. I don't know if this was done on purpose - but it was a little strange. I don't think that I would have been able to beat this if they HAD actually attacked. I would be very interested to know if this was actually planned. ( )
Thanks for such a great mission! The was full of new ideas and was a lot of fun to play.
