Playability: 4/5. A classic siege map, with a well built castle and plenty of defences to overcome. Likewise, playing as a defender you have the numbers to withstand a heavy attack on your castle.
Playability here was good throughout the map and I enjoyed attempting to overcome the castle, playing as an attacker on normal difficulty first. The key here, as per the author's instructions, is to use terrain to your advantage and moving my archers and crossbowmen to the higher terrain either side of the castle allowed me to take out most of the archers and the ballista positioned in the forward towers. As a defender playing on very hard, it was more a case of sitting back and allowing the castle to defend itself. Good fun throughout, good sized invasions allowed.
Balance: 4/5. More credit here for playing as an attacker. Using the troops supplied can be tricky and I had more success trading in some of the foot soldiers for crossbowmen. In theory, you could position them behind the castle and direct your fire against the Lord, achieving an easy win. I decided against this and played the map through in the proper siege fashion. Victory came relatively easy. As a defender, there isn't much to do, apart from a few times when I directed the hot oil engineers to take out the pikemen and swordsmen towards the end of the map. Still, it's a good effort, but would have been better with the high terrain on one side of the castle only, leaving you with a much harder job to control the other side.
Creativity: 3/5. Nothing new here, but a decent siege map all the same. It's more functional than creative and serves the purpose well. Would have benefitted from more time spent on the landscape and maybe even the castle.
Map Design: 3/5. As above, it's a functional map rather than something pleasing to the eye. The castle is quite well designed though with incredibly thick walls, but it does allow you to use tunnellers on the flat ground, a unit I really like as it adds a little bit more authenticity. The terrain was fairly dull, it has to be said, and more work on the landscape would have resulted in a higher score.
Story/Instructions: 3/5. Okay, not bad, not much here to introduce you though and no story. Only a little in the way of instructions results in an average score.
IN SUMMARY: Aside from the map design and lack of story here, it's an enjoyable map that kept me coming back for more! Good effort.
