This is a very challenging map. Burghausen is a tough defensive siege and will test your ability to effectively utilize a small garrison against a massive enemy assault.
Playability 5/5 this is a hard map make no mistake. Playing Burghausen on a difficulty level of hard was one of the most challenging defensive sieges I have ever downloaded. One aspect of the challenge is that you have to place your archers by hand. This takes up any time you might have had before the enemy is upon you. It took me three attempts to get this. My third attempt was a success. Losses were heavy at 62% of my defending troops. The AI moves all of the attacking macemen clear across the map and then holds a good portion of these units in reserve until the walls of Burghausen have been breached. Then the AI goes for the kill. The only complaint I have is that a lack of a single staircase caused some problems when moving troops. Access to the wall tops can only be gained through gatehouses. When the enemy is near, all of the castle gatehouses automatically shut. The result is that if you accidentally miss left clicking on your desired target, the game will teleport your selected troops off the walls and into the arms of the enemy. The author has given you numerous small pitch ditches that were also a problem to target due to the above-mentioned design niggle. This did not really affect the Playability and I deducted for this problem in Map Design.
Balance 5/5 Perfect, The attacking and defending troops are both very well balanced in their composition and in respect to each other. Kill pits and pitch ditches are strategically placed and a sensible amount is used. Enough to make victory possible yet still a challenge to obtain. The author has provided the down loader with an entertaining siege that has tons of re-playability due to its short duration and exciting pace. – Great Work!
Creativity 4/5 I personally like the early medieval castle layout. The design is very reminiscent of Chepstow Castle in Wales with its successive baileys one after another. The author shows a fundamental understanding of how castles were designed. A Spartan, military feel to the whole structure that translates from idea to a Stronghold map very well.
Map Design 4/5 A large amount of effort has gone into giving the down loader a very realistic and pleasing terrain to play in. Elevations and vegetation are very well done and the whole map has been given a lot of detail that is a nice change to what one usually sees in the downloads. IMO a little eye candy couldn’t have hurt. Again that is solely my own opinion others may feel different.
Story/Instructions 3/5 the download description page has some good notes on how to play the siege. The launch page has a short story that in comparison to the rest of this map is a lackluster effort at best. This is the only real criticism I have. After the author made such a splendid effort in the other aspects of Burghausen. The average effort applied in this category is a bit of a disappointment.
In Short- a highly recommended download. Burghausen is a great defensive siege that can be played several times. Thoroughly enjoyably!
