The Trade Highroad

Author File Description
Edward Hawksbrow
File Details
Map Size: 300x300 (Medium)
Difficulty: Normal
You have been charged with breaking the siege at Highcrag Castle. This fortress guards the vital trade road through the forbidding Danegeldill Mountains. Reinforcements have been landed on the beach at Highcrag village. Quickly deploy your men in the castle or give battle on the field. Smash the godless besiegers and re-establish your authority over this ancient high road. Secure the main high road but be wary of the inland route. Re-open the ancient ore mines ready for lucrative trading. Also a direct request from our holiness the Pope requires you to deal with the troublesome monastery at the shrine of St Lynley. This isolated coastal monastic order operates outside the churches authority, refusing to pay a percentage of income derived from pilgrims and disturbing reports of unsanctioned healings must be firmly dealt with.

Notes: The scenario has been updated after the valuable comments by brave sir robyn on 2003-01-15 fixing the attacking armies splitting up and the ability to totally block one attacking force.

brave sir robyn Playability: I did enjoy playing this scenario and would like to have scored it higher but there were a couple of points that prevented me from doing this. The enemy invasions can sometimes enter the map in two different places and the make their way to the same signpost, thus weakening their attacking force. It is also possible to negate one signpost, cutting off an entire section of the map. (I am assuming that the author did not intend this.)

Balance: This is not an easy game to win, from the battle at the very beginning to near the end you need to be in control of food, popularity, etc., otherwise it will turn against you quickly. Economic goals are tough but achievable with distance from stockpile being a big factor, if you survive the battles you should go on to win.

Creativity: The author has put in a lot of effort to make an interesting game, the monastery being in control of a dubious ally is a great touch, so unusual to see purple coloured troops in an invasion. Resources and farmland are not abundant and the routes to them can be very long and dangerous (although I did build some shortcuts). The religious aspect can be an interesting problem at the end with a hard choice to make.

Map Design: A realistic looking map with some good detailing, creating some long routes and hidden pathways over differing terrain heights. A drawback however is that if you wish you can delete the stone structures for cheap and easy stone for re-use.

Story: A good outline for the map with a lovely picture!

Overall: A challenging yet enjoyable scenario with plenty going on to keep you interested, gameplay is not overly hindered by faults, definitely worth a try.
