Thetford Castle 1070 AD

Author File Description
UnikUnok
File Details
Map Size: 400x400 (Large)
Difficulty: Normal
This castle was an early Norman Motte type castle. It was constucted entirely of wood and is therefore no match for siege engines, I suggest attacking without them. This map was designed to be either attacked or defended and to be played on any difficulty level.

Playability: 4/5. This is a very well thought out siege map based on another real castle, this time Thetford's motte and bailey construction. In line with the author's comments, I decided not to use siege equipment when attacking and even went so far as to limit myself to archers and pikemen, with only a few metal armoured troops. This is a surprisingly difficult castle to take with these troops (lightweight, not well defended) and the map is designed so that you can take your pick where you want to break through the wooden palisade walls. A nice change to the standard stone constructions the downloads have in abundance and smooth gameplay, as you would expect.

Balance: 4/5. Much better balance here than the previous author's work. Again, attacking offers more of a challenge as the AI doesn't work overly well with the design we have here. The killing pits and pitch ditches are back with a vengeance and whilst they are more strategically placed, they still offer a major obstacle to overcome. The author gets away with it here as you can just about avoid them if you pick your spot right. The enemy troops defending Thetford are a bigger player here and are almost perfectly balanced. using metal clad troops or macemen/crossbowmen allows you to play on normal or hard with no real effect in gameplay. Nice work here.

Creativity: 4/5. It's always good to see the wooden walling being used as a change from stone. Thetford's motte and bailey construction lends itself well to Stronghold and the artistic side of this map shines through once more.

Map Design: 5/5. No eye candy, a bit of terrain modelling, but an extremely well made castle, albeit simple in form. It's another great reconstruction of a former castle and the moat areas and ditches are modelled to perfection. I've tried to play around with ditches and moats myself but have not managed to create something so well done as this. Stunning effort and proof that the author has an eye for copying existing designs to the game very well.

Story/Instructions: 4/5. Another great write-up here and it's informative yet clear and concise. Providing a historical intro to maps such as these is essential IMO as there are many that enjoy the historical aspect. Good work throughout.

IN SUMMARY: Liked this a lot. It's possible to win quite easily with heavy troops but try it using lighter choices rather than hundreds of pikemen. Good work once again, UnikUnok!
