HelmzDeep

Author File Description
the Grub
File Details
Map Size: 400x400 (Large)
Difficulty: Impossible
Inspired by the movie Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, this is my version of Helms Deep. Up to 5 players, with either one or two players defending the Rohann fortress and up to 3 players bent on wiping them out.

This is a LONG siege map, if defended well, it could take hours. The eastern wall has a small section that can be breached with rams or other seige, but take warning those defending: the wall and towers to the east cannot be repaired once destroyed. With STRONG WALLS ON this could take some time- enough time to amass a huge army. There is a narrow ramp leading to the front gates that will be difficult to attack, but not impossible to a determined Lord with hundreds of men (orcs) at his bidding.

Best played as a multiplayer map, be prepared for a long, drawn out war. BUILD WISELY! If those outside, do not make the best of the resources available, they could turn into the hunted once the war has begun. Enjoy!

I came out, after playing this map with mixed feelings...on one hand, I was impressed by the prebuilt fortress, that is Helms Deep, in this map.I was anticipating a war on an epic scale, but sadly after playing for a few hours as a defender i realized the shortcomings of this map.
Firstly the castle is nearly unassailable...I watched as three of my friends send wave after wave of swordsmen, macemen and pikemen up the ramp, only to be cut down mercilessly by the many siege engines placed on innumerable towers in front of the gate. They next tried to destroy the breachable area in the wall which proved useless as trebuchets ,already deployed for me, destroyed their siege engines and the diseased cows just weakend them enough to be picked off by my crossbowmen. Obviously some serious play balancing needs to be done.
Another thing is that the map is designed in a wierd way...the author says that the map is inspired by the movie...but the details are obviously lacking...sure the place is rigged to be breached through the middle of the wall and a rivulet flows beneath it...but thats about it...the bad poins are that the ramp is too long, the gate is TOO WELL GUARDED (i think thats an understatement) and the althoug the author has tried to make it feel like the movie...it comes across as visually unappealing.
I recommend this map to be played against other human players only since the AI cannot even hope to take helms deep while you defend it and attacking becomes boring since the AI starts attacking you instead of defending the keep !!

Anyway, its a good attempt by the author. A siege scenario in Stronghold would definitly have more accuratly potrayed the siege of helms deep as shown in the movie. Also a deeper storyline would have helped the overall score although this is a multi map...its still based on a subject matter with rich backgroung history.
A reduction of siege engines availble to the defenders, would certainly have made the scenario more interesting.
That's all i think. Nice try.
