Well, here's a bit of a treat. A siege map that looks good, plays very well and can be extremely tricky. I had a few attempts at this, both as a defender and attacker, and found it to play very well. A sound castle design ensures that gameplay isn't inhibited, with no bugs, no real AI problems and some pretty heavy attacks to fend off. Best played as an attacker rather than a defender, see balance comments below for my thoughts on this.
Okay, starting with attacking the castle first. Great, great fun. Forget attacking from the front, you'll be cut to pieces, burnt, hacked, slashed and decimated within a few seconds. I opted to take a sneaky route to the keep, moving all my troops to the far left of the map, after some truly awful ideas and some extremely embarassing efforts! With a good selection of archers and/or crossbowmen, I cleared some of the towers and walls and proceeded to use tunnellers to knock through an area of very thick walling. This allowed me to pick off a few enemy placements. I also filled in the moat leading to the rear of the castle, leaving only one small gatehouse to destroy and then on into the keep. Losses weren't too bad this time around, but beware of pitch and killing pits. As a defender, the game is relatively easy and I had little to do, apart from light pitch and let the killing pits decimate some of the pikemen. The caged war dogs were useful in attacking any siege equipment the AI choce to launch. Definitely best as an attacker.
Very good castle design, a lot of work has gone into this to reflect a mirror image. Whilst there was nothing radically new here, what the author has done is of good quality throughout and this is noted.
Map Design: 4/5
As above, the castle is extremely well rendered and takes on the appearance of a heavily fortified structure, with neat stairways leading up to sections of the wall. Some very nice gatehouse structures and tower placements leave this looking almost like a fantasy take castle. The surrounding landscape was a little plain with some evidence of modelling and thought gone into the look of the land. But the scores here goes for a great looking castle, nice work!
The author has expressed thoughts and feelings over the design by way of an introduction and this helps to understand what is being offered and what the author has attempted to provide... a decent siege map. Would have scored higher with evidence of a story to accompany the map, or maybe more content to really grab the attention, but what is here is fine.
IN SUMMARY: Another first submission to the site, and a very credible one at that. I found this to be best if attacking, maybe on normal or hard setting, but the choice is there to play around. Good map, looking forward to more!
