Holding the Fort - Version 1.0
By Andrew Dunn, aka Mechstra, Second in Command of Woad Creations
~-~-~-~-~-~
Storyline:
A large castle in the territory of the Wolf is under your control, having taken it more
or less intact the previous night, with only two casualties on your side. This castle has now become the refuge for the main part of the King's army, attacked and routed on its way north. All four of the surrounding Dukes have declared war, seeing an opportunity to rid themselves of a troublesome King.Hasty reparations have been made to the small breach in the wall, although this is a weak point and should be defended well. Hold the castle at all costs until the King's archers can reinforce the position with any local supporters and drive away the attackers!

Playability: 5/5
Brilliant! Holding the Fort is a fantastic map across the board and is Stronghold at it's very best. The story is self-explanatory, and this gives you the introduction to what you can expect. With a healthy number of troops you face multiple attacks for a number of years in what can only be described as a classic siege of the castle. And it is a classic, for what makes this so enjoyable to play is the real feeling of facing a large attack. The clever use of multiple invasions, in manageable numbers, with an ideal troop combination makes this map stand out for me. Stronghold seems to work best when the attacking AI is in smaller groups with variety of troops and a number of invasion points. The ending is very well done too, and fits in with the story. You really must play this to understand what I mean... the map works with the AI rather than against it and as a result Mechstra has provided a superbly playable (and replayable) invasion. Simple, but highly effective.
Balance: 5/5
Although mentioned above, the size of invasions, the frequency, the troop combinations and units used together with the length of time you face before the ending is spot on. In addition to this, the units at your disposal to defend the castle is sufficient to leave you wondering if you are going to win or lose... I played six times in all and each time I was unsure if I was going to withstand the AI attacks. Balance is exceptionally good. Mechstra makes this element of design look easy.
Creativity: 4/5
The strong point of this in terms of creativity is the clever use of invasions as above. Overall the idea is quite simple and this works well, with an almost 'back to basics' approach in terms of how the map plays. I really do rate this map highly in all areas, as each element knits together well.
Map Design: 4/5
For me, the score here lies with the design of the castle, which is very well done without the use of excessive eye candy and looks like a proper castle, and the map layout which allows the multiple invasions to work, leaving you facing attacks on multiple sides. Good stuff here, and although the look of the terrain may be a little bare in areas, this doesn't distract from a good looking map.
Story/Instructions: 4/5
An extremely well written story introduces the downloader to 'Holding the Fort'. It's easy to read and quite involving, indeed what all good stories should be. Compliments the map very well.
IN SUMMARY
This has to be one of the best maps I have played in a long while. The simple theme that runs through this works so well that it's hard not to like it. Quality work, Mechstra, and definitely recommended to others. |

This is going down as one of my most favorite maps ever! The only thing that I could ask from you is that the castle be designed a little better. I.E. Bigger walls in the back and more flashy like desgin.
The playability of this map is AWESOME, if its on easy, you can sit back relax and watch the wolf, rat, snake, and pigs men be slaughtered. If you put it on very hard its practically impossible!! Great job differing the map to make it impossible or easy, great job!
The creativity of the map was good, I liked the idea of them declaring war and having the king send archers if you make it.
The map design could use a little help with the castle and surroundings.
The Story and instuctions were GREAT! Very good job on that maybe a little more help on what forces you were going against, maybe a scout saying how many troops each king is sending etc..
Thanks for the fun map!
