Sparrow's Extreme Challenges
My personal picks of the most difficult maps to play on "very hard" setting.

This is the map thread for:

Challenge #13   posted April 8, 2006
Treasure Island
by Duke of York

One of My All Time Favorites. Another great (and hard) one from DoY, with his usual attention to landscaping detail and scripting. Choose your keep location on this one and see if you can build defenses to hold back the invading hoards.

Good choice, Sparrow!

I remember that tricky one by Duke of York, however I confess never having played on "hard" or "very hard"... hmm let's give it another try!

Great, glad to hear it, Stratego.

Thank you for considering this map for one of your 'challenges'. I am not boasting by any sense of the matter, but my hat is off to anyone who can beat this scenario on hard or VERY HARD!

There are several locations for placing your keep - be sure to maximize the use of terrain for defensive purposes and make the most of the available resources.

It has been a while since I have played this scenario but I will be glad to try and give some pointers if asked.

Good Luck!

OK Sparrow, good choice! I finished it on very hard. Unfortunately, I didn't see my victory screen, because of pitch store condition. My counter does not count pitches, but at the end I had 164 so I hope, its enough. :-)

Good God!

After several time-consuming, and vain attempts (on hard), I think it's better to leave this one to the "real specialists". No matter where i placed the keep and the stockpiles, no matter how I established a well-running economy, no matter how much effort I put into the defense of my settlement, I was totally overrun in the course of time, to say nothing of bears, wolves, bandits, plagues and fires...

...I succeeded in surviving until 2014 when those hordes of mounted knights appeared leaving behind traces of devastation all over the island...

...maybe I'm not creative enough to beat it on hard or very hard! Now, I'm really anxious to read the solution on this!

Dark NeRo,

it seems you confounded Sparrow's and Stratego's names... the maps you mentioned have been created by myself, and I'm going to design another one...in the near future ;-)

Well, that's all of them. Not too difficult overall, but fun nonetheless.

Sparrow, don't know if you remember, but I asked you a few months ago if Treasure Island would be included. This is without execption, the most difficult and frustrating map I have ever tried to play on very hard.

After 50+ attempts on Very Hard over months and months, I finaly beat it a few months ago, in February. I tried 30 times with my keep in one location, then tried 2 other locations. Those little tiny seemingly innocent streams are havoc on defending a large keep/castle!! I only was able to beat it after playing several other of the extreme challenges and getting better.

I will try to beat it again but I am not sure if I have the mental strength to try it again! Once again, Duke of York, a fantastic map!

Finished on VERY HARD.

SCORE:
Level 15000
troops lost 55% 4500
514 ex wood 2570
184 ex fruit 920
14 ex iron 280
7622ex gold 7622

TOTAL 30,892.

This took me a total of 36 years (till Sept 1236) to complete-a littel slow but finished!

Excellent! Great Job - it is really good to get a victory after such frustration. That is the most difficult map I have made - most of my scenarios are not that hard and I intended the average player to be able to THINK and beat them. This one was the exception however.

Thanks for playing it.
