This map is designed as an attacking siege only. Normal or higher is the intended level of challenge.
A few historical notes are provided on the launch page before you begin the siege. For a truly incredible write up of the history of Kenilworth castle. Read Castle of the Week #63 by Angel Sulis. The historical summary he provides is essential to enjoying this siege map IMO.
This map is set at the beginning of the great siege of 1266.
Kenilworth's massive and elaborate water defenses will limit your options of attack and make a direct assault impossible. The Fortress has a productive and abundant food supply. This combined with the castles formidable appearance has given the garrison incredible courage and morale. Accordingly, their 'Troop Combat Bonus' has been significantly boosted. The attacking troop combination should suffice for victory but feel free to alter it, as several different combinations will work. |

In introduction to this map I found it enjoyable and challenging but also I d have a few quiries. A playable but I thinks it is a shame you cannot defend this castle. When I attacked then castle I went across the ditches and moats as it seemed easier than to attack the gatehouses. In my experience the best sieges are when you have to go through most of the castle. The route I took made it quite easy to reach the keep without troubling most of the defenders. Although I killed the enemy Lord with very few men left on normal so the map in my opinion is very well balanced with me just failing on hard. A creative map - historical castle are harder to make as you have a ground plan to follow so creativity is harder. Map design, a 4, generally good but lacking in places(slightly ordinary). Good clear instructions - I remember it was castle of the week a couple of weeks ago so there was a nice storyline. Overall I think the map is good siege especially as it is a historic castle which limits you slighly. I do think that 4.2 is a fairer score. |

Playabality is good, however taking this castle is an affair of patience. Dont dream of heroic charge. Perhaps playability suffer, one my eyes of too much traps, or to be too historical. When you launch the game you understand it will not be fun holiday to take this castle... like taking a castle in middle age I suppose.
Balance.
Here I played at hard, once playing completly fair game (+ being very unlucky with treb accuracy) and another time, for test, using attrition war. First was at heavy loose (close to 80%) second far more easy, and equaly far less glorious. Each time I used original troops only. The Keep Imo suffer to be vulnerable, but it's better like that to counter balance difficult approach of the castle.
Creativity here is great especially recreating an historical castle, and the adequate feeling to the player. Earthwork is of a quality rarely view until today. The castle and his defences seems very realist. However Siege warfare in middle age were long and boring. Here the creative work to recreat this, as impressive it could be, can also have bad side, simply because stronghold is a game.
Map design :
First feeling regarding the map design is not impressive, especially landscape. However there is one or two eyes candy and an impressive earthwork, but overall it's an empty feeling which predomine : most responsible are flat and empty outer baley and completly empty grim water. However it's missing the castle is in pure military work, and map as historical reconstitution. Sadly in a paradoxe the goal of the map : make an historical castle, is perfectly transcribed but hurt artistic/beauty of the map. In medieval war fortress were really grim and autere with clean, clear, plane and regular area. Of course it was the rule (if the lord was enough rich for maintenance) : clean all shrub around the castle clean it off trees, flattening terrain : all of this to let as less protection and possibility to hide to the ennemies. Sadly for a game it inspire a boring feeling. Perhaps the map is too historical, but had also to be rated in this way. That dont prevent me to think that some few "mistakes" can be allowed and accepted, considering, even for an historical map, that stronghold is a game. For the earthwork I was impressed, the tortuous way between earthwork and moat is even invisible until you try to make your way. It can also fools a little AI and pathfinding.
Refering to the Castle of the week story, explaination and pictures, I wonder If I can rate it less than 5.
