This map won the Eye-Candy section in the recent Stronghold Crusader map design contest. It is a siege scenario, where your task will be to defend one of the most legendary fortresses of all time, Crac des Chevaliers, against successive waves(invasions) of Arab attackers. The zip file includes the map(a slightly updated version of the contest map, with some improvements in the castle design), a full history and architectural features of the castle, a photograph of Crac today and finally strategy tips(please read them only if you have difficulties in winning the scenario, otherwise it might be rather easy for expert players!).
A lot of work has been dedicated to both the castle design (it is as close to the real thing as the editor would permit it) and the combat itself(for example the direction from which the attack came, which was historically from the South). According to historical sources, the Mamluk Sultan Baybars after long preparations left Cairo with a massive army on 24 January 1271, heading for Crac. After taking Chastel Blanc and some other minor forts, he appeared outside Crac on 3 March. It was the beggining of the end for what was probably the most formidable Crusader Stronghold in all of the Latin East. After 4 weeks of fierce bombardment and several attempts of tunneling, the attackers managed to breach the outer enceinte and the defenders surrendered shortly after. Some say that Baybars actually deceived them with a forged letter by the Grand Master of the Hospitallers, ordering the garrison to surrender the castle. Anyway, I hope you will be able to change History and defend your castle to the last man, if necessary! Yours, Velerefontis

Having seen this map before, I myself decided to reconstruct the mighty Krak, I guess this map was an inspirational source, and after all this time i decided to give it a go.
Playability: 4
This map saw a vast amount of troops besieging the fortification yet I found that there was for a vast amount of time nothing for me to do. I brang forward troops from the back as they were not needed in that area, then took out my knights to slaughter the first group of archers, but that was about it. Most of the troops just sat by teh sign post and were not involved till the end, and by then they could do little.
Balance: 3
The balkance unfourtunately suffers in this map as the oncomming troops are almost taken out from a mixture of vollies and hurled stones, I finished the map on my first attempt and the enemy didn't break through the first wall. The few assasins that mannaged to enter the first section were quickly bolted down by those in the inner ward. In fairness the AI is most commonly stupid and it can be hard to get them to do what you want, they did attack on both sides yet were unable to cause any reall damage.
Creativity: 5
I myself have recreated this map, and i am always glad to see other peoples interpritations. The designer utalises the towers in the editor set to reconstruct the mighty fortress. Every one sees things differently and thats what I like, the design is unique. Good Job. I particualarly like how you incoporated the keep into the map.
Map Design: 3
I know that the crusader editor is limmited, yet i feel more coul have been done to make the terrain look more presentable. the use of stones around the cliffs can vastly improve the visual aspects of the map, try to incoporate as much as possible as it will ad depth to the design.
Story/Instructions: 5
This beign the strongest point of the design deserves the full marks. There are hints, history and even notes about architecture, truely facinating to read, even if i have read it before. ;) Everything is helpful and well written, great stuff.
