**The year is 1740AD**

You are Don Manuel de Montiano, Spanish Governor of Florida, and commander the Castillo de San Marcos at St. Augustine.

As you stand on the terreplein of the Castillo, a messenger comes running with news that English ships have anchored in the south channel and troops are putting ashore on Anastasia Island with siege equipment. The battle is about to begin!

**Historical Background**

The settlement of St Augustine was established in 1565 to defend Spanish interests in the region against other European nations. It was built, in particular, to protect ships returning to Spain via the Gulf Stream laden with gold and silver from the Spanish Main.

In 1586 the English pirate, Francis Drake, fresh from a marauding expedition spotted the outpost. The tiny Spanish garrison was no match for Drake’s force of twenty ships and 2000 men and St. Augustine was burned to the ground.

After that a series of wooden forts were constructed to improve the defense of St. Augustine but these proved weak against attack. Eventually Spain decided to build a new fort made of masonry. The Castillo of San Marcos was completed in 1695.

In 1702, English troops besieged the Castillo. For fifty days they tried to take the stronghold. They destroyed the settlement but found they could not break through the walls and the Castillo refused to surrender.

Finally, in 1740 English General James Oglethorpe attacked the castillo but failed to take it after a siege of 27 days.

**Your Mission**

Relive the siege of 1740. Gather your forces, prepare to defend the Castillo and repel the English Pirates! The soldiers under your command and the citizens of St. Augustine are depending on you. Fight for the honor of Spain!

**Brief Design notes**

We have tried to construct an accurate model of the Castillo and the settlement of St. Augustine as they might have looked around 1740. In order to obtain a variety of buildings, we used various enemy “colors” in the construction. For the most part, this will not affect the way you play the game, but there are a few issues you need to be aware of. Please read the full notes included with the download for details.

Castillo de San Marcos was a father-son joint effort. I believe you will soon be seeing my son submit scenarios under his own name. Look for "Thorium.”

Let us know how you enjoy the Castillo de San Marcos!
