„Last Retreat“ is one of the most beautiful maps that I recently have played. Here we’ve got an incredibly naturalistic landscape, designed with love for detail work.
The best part of this map definitely is the lovingly constructed compact castle, that is integrated to a wonderfully modelled desert with various rocky and fertile areas.
The initial strength of your troops is just sufficient to resist the first two invasions, though you should concentrate on starting a forced weapon production in an early phase (crossbowmen, knights or pike men), with regard to the increasing invasions that will be imminent. Of course, a stable and well-flourishing economy belongs to a successfully growing development. In this special case the magic key word is “wood”. You should try to cultivate all possible arable land as fast as you can by clearing most of the existing palm tree forests. Because a constant food supply will become a permanent problem in the course of time, if you’re neglecting this aspect. Another important component will be the continuing production of swords and armours, the two main parts of the victory conditions. The more weapons you’ll produce, the more successful you’ll be in repelling the hostile attacks. Actually, eliminating the lions will make things easier and the most important building might be your market, where you’re able to sell different abundant goods (like wood or pitch) for the purchase of additional food or weapons. And it isn’t harmful at all to expand your defensive structures towards the two signposts, located on the western map‘s corners. A few strong and thick walls and adding three or four square /round towers will help to be prepared for the enemy’s assaults. Staffing the towers by an imposing amount of archers, assisted by ballistas should strengthen your defence, even to withstand the last enormous invasion. However, here’s my personal critical note:
You totally have to play 56(!) game years until all objectives will be fulfilled and under these circumstances it might be a little bit annoying (especially boring for some impatient players) towards the end of the scenario, when you’ve reached the economical goals within the first 25 years, for instance.
The author tells us in a few simple words, what you will expect and how to manage it, maybe there’s no more needed.
Well, in deed, HASIT, you have it, the obvious talent of creating wonderful maps and I am waiting for a lot more creations.
A very nice map from HASIT, recommendable!!

Excellent map; well laid out, and a nice castle. My only complaint was with the long stretches without any kind of attack... the final onslaught could have come a little sooner, but all in all a very nice scenario. |
