Le neuvieme chatiment (DON’T RATE IT)
I was joking of course : review it, rate it, but bash it sink it, be unfair and treacherous, free your most lower instincts. If it’s not enough, Email moderators to demand to be allowed to rate sections 0 instead of the lowest usual 1. Be a dishonest crook if you write review, and if you temporary lack of imagination, simply lie !!!
Le neuvieme chatiment (the ninth punishment) is a siege map to play as defender only. Difficulty level could be from easy to hard. I advise "normal" setting for a first try, even I think easy would be more adequate for most. It’s highly advised to play with patched game (or warchest).
Story
Your ancestor had duped the Evil, and your family was cursed for nine generations because of this. For each generation of the family, terror and desolation strike the fief when a connection with Hell appears in the ground and hordes of demons surge down to punish your family.
Today it's your turn!
Today is the last and final chatiment. It's said it will not be a punishement this time, but nobody knows if it will be the end of the curse or the end of your family dynasty. You have a holy relic inside the castle to protect you against the curse - don't loose it! Complete story can be found inside the map during the map briefing.
Tips
Pause the game at the start and slow down speed to 10. Make yourself familiar with the castle, and evaluate the situation. Then release the pause. The front-left tower is often a hot point. Send at least one pitch engineer there immediatly. Assign position to your troops and organize them. I suggest you send macemen and knights near the main gate, and put "reserve missiles troops" in front of the castle (on the Keep and the two front towers). Give mangonels static targets by using their "attack here" order. If you let mangonels do what they want their efficiency will be bad and when trying to target rams they could even harm your castle and troops. Don't hesitate to open the main gate and rush out with macemen and knights (why not pikemen too) to free preasure under your gate, right flank wall and even right-back tower. Move back in to the security of the castle once the duty is done.
Don't forget that if you loose all your shrines you will fall under the full effect of the curse and loose the game! So you cant mass all your infantery in the keep for a last stand.**
Because it's violent and intense, this map is not expected to be played at high speed. I suggest you slow down to 10 at the very begining then once your orders are given and troops are organised you can release the game's speed between 15 to 20.
The keep is the only means to access the wall. It's a security feature but also a worry because you will often have to open the small inner gate to allow troop movements.
Enjoy, and beware. If you are defeated, you will not only loose your life, you will loose your soul!
** this feature can be disabled in game, if it annoy you. Look for a torture engine in the north west and destroy it. I unlock it in final version, allowing his destruction. Do it is acceptable if special loose condition upset you, or if it’s the only mean to win for you.
Anyway don’t forget to bash the map and sink the score.

Hi Jalis~
I tried emailing the mods to be able to give zeros, but my pleas fell on deaf ears. Just kidding!
Terrific visual effects - what a great idea! :)

First, I'd like to say it was about half a year since I downloaded the map, but I'm still playing it. This review may be a bit out of date, but I feel this map needs to be rated.
Playability: 5
Is this map fun? No, I wouldn't say this map is fun, it's so far beyond fun. I've played only a few sieges that has given me equal satisfaction to play...not to say win.
Balance: 5
To be honest, the map is a bit too hard for me, but I don't want to reduce the overall score for this terrific map. But it sure is challenging to beat it...I admit I mostly cheat and destroy the torture engine to the north...
Creativity: 5
I wish I could give this a 6, 'cause I've never seen a more creative map. The nice scripting event with the Fear Factor is nice, took me weeks to figure out how this was done (yeah, I'm not very good at scripting =P). But the obvious most creative part of the map is the coloured soldiers. I still don't know how this is done, but it sure looks nice. Also small details as the keep being the only accesspoint to the walls brings this up to way beyond a 5.
Map Design: 5
Magnificent. The terrain has a really dark and almost depressive mood. The great crater from which the enemy seem to spawn looks nice with all the fog raising from it. The castle is a little masterpiece of engineering aswell.
Story/Instructions: 5
Short, to the point, with a fantastic storyline. Great work!
Additional Comments:
Wow...this map is just so good...can't praise you enough for this one.

You're too kind with me, too hard with you.
"I admit I mostly cheat and destroy the torture engine to the north"
It's not cheating at all. If it exist at sh1, several difficulties levels, the torture engine is just an other. Everybody is free to use the level he want, to have fun. Like my maps tend to be a bit hard, this option, I feeled, was not a luxe, for this map.
Ps : coloured soldiers were made using an hexadecimal editor, directly on the map file. |

Hexadecimal editor? Where could I find one of those? (I've always wanted to screw up sprites on some of my other games!) |

I hope you don't mind me doing this, but I really want to review this map, and say the exact same thing as Jasper... lol. It's great...and even greater than great... in all aspects...

Well with all the recent mention of hex editing I felt I should take a look at the only downloadable map with some versions on it(I think?) Anyway, I'm no the biggest fan of it and don't think I'll ever try to use it. That could change though...anyway on with the review.
Playability: 4
I guess that sieges aren't all that playable, nothing more than moving troops...however that can be quite fun when its a good map and this one does satisfy. Look to where the enemy attacks bring forth you archers set troops in certain strategic points to hold out the enemy long enough for your bolts to pierce them. Good stuff.
Balance: 5
Really good challenge here, took a couple of goes to get the right angle so to speak, then I realised I had an oil guy, ah well still a god old fight that saw my archers batter down th elast few that made it into the keep. Nice.
Creativity: 4
Well I suppose the whole idea was quite creative, though I did say im not a fan, yet i wont let that bring you down, thats just my opinion. The assults are well timed and keep you thinking.
Map Design: 4
A rough and lumpy terrain type wich uses a great deal of wha the editor has to offer, it blends quite wll with the castle and looks great witht the enemy streaming toward you.
Story/Instructions: 5
Good story and good helpful hints, wish i had read them before playing, that would have helped. :)
