Edoras, the capital and greatest city of all Rohan, has endured war for hundreds of years, without ever having to endure a siege. But now, after the fall of Helm's Deep, the hour has come. There are no heroes this time to save the day. The only defence of Rohan consists of a couple of soldiers, brave, but outnumbered. Proper use of strategy is our last chance. |

This map is an interesting attempt to recreate the settlement of Edoras from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy – a city set on a hill and surrounded by a plain. The designer has used only wood for fortifications and, as much as possible, only wood for other structures on the map. Units defending the city are primarily archers, knights and monks with a smattering of other units mixed in.
The defender has a wooden keep but next to this is a saxon hall in an enemy color. I suspect that the designer has placed this here for eye-candy. Strangely, there are also a number of enemy peasants trapped within wooden walls near the hall. The enclosed settlement is full of hovels and horse stalls.
The wood-theme is nice however stone wall and tower construction is allowed and there is plenty of money to buy stone from the market. I was tempted to reinforce the keep with nice thick stone walls but resisted doing so to preserve the theme of the game. It would be better if these options were turned off in the editor.
The terrain is quite flat except for the city center plus a few “mountains” that pop up out in the plain. A stream flows nearby. I can see that the designer has tried to make use of the various map editor options, trees, rocks, plants, animals, water, and variations in elevation are all present in this map. Only more practice and time are needed to produce a more realistic effect. A good effort for your first upload. Map Design – 3, Creativity - 4
After a first attempt just to look over the map and locate the main features and resources, I restarted and began to play seriously. Action comes quickly and repeatedly in this map as one huge invasion follows another at regular intervals. It was hard to know how to best deploy my archers and when to pull them back. Soon I was overrun and enemy units were beginning to attack the lord. It looked like all was lost when, unexpectedly, I got the victory sign.
Opening the map in the editor I found that the only condition listed for victory is killing 1000 enemy (any). However the map itself states that victory comes from killing the Wolf and in the game all the attackers are from the Pig.
There is something odd about the win conditions in this game but, in any event, it was fun to play a little on the easy side. Playability – 4, Balance – 3
The story was good but quite short and within the map itself the story section was empty.
Story – 3
Nogusta – this is a good first effort. I would encourage you to take more time with the terrain design – include more variations of elevation, use stones and plants etc. to produce natural looking outcrops, etc. Also, the settlement itself would have looked more realistic with “advanced hovels. (Go to the Scenario Design section of the forum and use the search feature to look up “hovel” for info on how to do this.). I hope to see more maps from you on SHH,

I didnt really like the big mixture of different units, it should only be archers and lots of horses, maybe som swordman. The map is great but it doesnt really look like Edoras. To place archers where the enemy doesnt go is not the best stratagy u can do. When the enemy destroyes the main gate they can easily go to the lord and kill him, not good at all, its just a wooden gate, it goes down pretty easy. This scenario is maybe not the best ive played. i suggest u fix the problems. I liked ure helms deep, that was a good one. But im still waiting for Minas Tirith... |
