Loosely based on the book "Glitterspike Hall" by Mike Jefferies. Recommended!
-Map updated with more needed to win - 11/12/05
Lord Miresnare rules the lands of Gnarlsmere from the stronghold of Glitterspike Hall perched atop a rocky mountain top. Surrounding this elevated position are bogs, swamps and stretches of open water. During the night hours, these 'quickmires' freeze hard enough to to walk on. Thats is when the marshlords run their mudbeasts into the beasting pits below Glitterspike Hall! The marshlords can only dream of living on the only solid ground where Glitterspike Hall sits. The marshlords and their marshwaders (servants) are very cunning and finally discovered the only weakness of Glitterspike Hall. Their marshwader scouts observed your soldiers using the secret exit that leads to the lighthouse tower! They are willing to risk blood to take the only dry ground between here and the Fearsome Fogs, they want Glitterspike Hall itself! You control the high ground and volcanic crater. The crater's soil is extremely fertile and special crops of mutant plants will grow in it. You are required to gather 85 (normal level) bushels of a special kind of mutant wheat that only grows in the crater of Glitterspike Hall. The economy of your small camp has very little resources on which to sustain itself. Some ingenuity and resourcefulness is required to run the place. The marshlords have found the back entrance so watch out!
I admit I make smaller maps mostly. The next map of mine might be a 400x400. Who knows!
As always, postive and constructive criticism welcomed. Ratings too!

--This review has been edited--
Edited notes:
I replayed the map on "hard" difficulty and I had to struggle a bit to win. So Im going to lift some scores here.
Playability: 5
--rescored from 4.5 to 5 (not that this change makes a difference to the score in a stronghold map due to rounding) for edited version--
Very fun to play first time round. Its fun to look at all the little details of the map, and the player is kept busy with collecting the wheat and dealing with invasions. The edited version has a perfect score for playability in my mind, and the player now sees the invasions which may not have been witnessed before. The player can enjoy the beauty of the map while waiting for tasks to be accomplished, however he/she also has to deal with numerous invasions, keeping the interest level at maxximum. For the updated version this section deserves a 5, a perect playability score! Good work! :)
Balance: 4.5 (rounded to 5)
--rescored from 3 to 4.5 (rounded up of course) for the edited version--
I noticed how you changed the wheat win requirement to make it harder, and this way more ivasions come and I actually lose a fair amount of troops on normal and need to build more to survive, so I will give a 4.5 in balance (which is rounded up to five) because I retried it and had a good challenge.
Creativity: 5
A highly creative map, I havent read the book, but it seems that you've done the author justice. Good work!
Map Design: 5
I loved the sunken wooden barricades, the crater, and even the way you've done the stockpile! :) Extremely excellent map design. I still wouldnt be suprised if you told me you worked for firefly. :)
Story/Instructions: 5
Again, I havent read the book, but Im sure that youve done the author justice with your rendition of the story. I like how youve also blended in the objectives into the storyline, and it gives the map a great fictional appeal, that a historical map would not give.
Additional Comments:
Very, very good map. I recommend this map as a download for anyone looking for a good fun game, as well as for those who want tips on designing maps. The map design here in my opinion, is another example of the ideas presented in Lollard's map making 101 article on "simple vs complex" and I recommend reading the article as a companion with playing the map. A fantastic map, well done! I will definatley read the book after playing this map :)[Edited on 11/12/05 @ 11:43 PM]

That sounds like a good idea. I retried the map on "hard" difficulty and had a bit of a struggle to win, so I've lifted the scores for playability and balance.

Lollard, I was wondering if you wanted to help me make a combined map, where I will send you my design (or a few designs), and you add to and/or change the design in ways you see will make the map better, and then submit it here for download as a combined author map. Does that sound like a good idea to you? Anyway, if you are interested, I could also try to improve on some of your maps too if you wanted. This way our maps could be better refined etc. and we could exchange them with other authors too who might be able to add to the map to make it better. I've been thinking of this idea for a while now, and if you are interested you can post ideas either here or in my Berkhamsted download section. As ive said we can send the map through a number of authors who each add their own creative spark to the map, and maybe end up with a 5 rating map :). Please tell me if your interested or not, as I would like to start soon.
Thx,

Playability: 4
The playability is fine, as soon as you get a short break from the frequent invasions, you must focus at buying and selling goods, recruiting troops etc etc.
Balance: 4
I have not been able to finish this map at normal yet, although I've tried six times, but better players than me should find this map a very well-balanced map.
Creativity: 5
Well...I've never seen anything like this before, so a clear 5.
Map Design: 4
The map is small, but the little there is looks good, and you've done a great work with the equalizer tool.
Story/Instructions: 5
Well written and creative, although they're based on a book.
Additional Comments:
This is a small, and almost hysterical map. Not a dull moment.
And some commersials: please download, play, and rate my map The New King (in the Invasions-section).

Try it on easy if you cant get the 85 wheat in time. On easy you only need 42, and the attacks by the marshlords are smaller too.

I have to say I see similarities between Volcano Ridge and Glitterspike Hall (both volcano based). This map is based on one of my favorite fictional books, Glitterspike Hall. This map has been in some form on my hard drive for some time. I finally cleaned it up and got it posted. I will say that Glitterspike Hall from the book is a larger scale (more houses). Skaaj just send me a email with your ideas, and I will respond today with some ideas and comments.
