War in the East:
The "War in the East" Map is based on the eastern conflict (LotR) and is representative of the war between Gondor and Mordor. Gondor controls Minas Tirith, and maintains skeletal control over Osgiliath (which has been evacutated). The hobbits are making their way to Mount Doom, the rangers who escorted the hobbits are returning, and two suprise reinforcement armies are due to show up some time during the seige of Minas Tirith. Mordor controls Mordor (again... obvious) and is currently laying seige to Osgiliath, while the army due to attack Minas Tirith makes its final preperations. Shelob threatens to stop the hobbits in their tracks, and Sauron can soon expect a helpful hand from the tainted Men of the East.
War in the West:
The map is for Crusader, and is set in Western middle earth, and the war between Rohan and Isengard. Rohan controls the last refuge of Helms Deep and the brave warriors of the Rohirrim (knights), as well as an army representative of the two hobbits and the ents, while Isengard controls the walled fortress of Isengard (obviously ) and the hordes of Uruks including Lurtz' Uruks who were bringing the hobbits to Isengard.

BTW, this map pack is intended for multiplayer (2 player) use only. The AI WON'T work on this map, so don't bother trying.
If anyone has gamespy and wants to play against me on either (or both) of these maps, please email me at:

Playability: 5
As stated these maps are not designed for computer opponent play. They are designed to play like the movie with human vs. human in multiplayer. As stated, Gondor controls Minas Tirith, and maintains skeletal control over Osgiliath (which has been evacutated). The hobbits are making their way to Mount Doom, the rangers who escorted the hobbits are returning, and two suprise reinforcement armies are due to show up some time during the seige of Minas Tirith. There is a whole undead army (assassins) on the ship. I played this great map in multiplayer as suggested. Playing either side is great fun. If you are a fan of the LOTR books and movies, then you will enjoy these maps. I have low interest in Tolkien, prefering other authors and character lineups. I have watched the movies, but havent read all the books. With the movie only as reference, the first map is 100 accurate in my opinion.
The second map is set in Western middle earth during the war between Rohan and Isengard. The actual deforesting is represented! Its a great battle here, with alot of soldiers on each side jockeying for position at the start. Once the battle starts, its a all out war. I had some armored horse knights running along the walls during one of the multiplayer games. I think that Tolkien himself (if he was alive) would like this representation. 5 all around on playability.
Balance: 4
The maps are large, with many starting troops. I prefer the build up and strategy in that aspect. I think Tolkien helped to define modern fantasy and his work will be drawn upon for centuries. Everytime someone rolls up a D&D character and picks a class they are walking a road that Tolkien laid out with his genius. That kind of influence should be noted. And these maps honor LOTR.
Creativity: 5
Skaaj personally comes up with great material everytime he starts a project. This map pack should be noted as some of his best work ever. Will he go down in quality with his next map? Probably. Oh yeah, not only do you get one beautiful map with extreme detail and creative effect, BUT TWO!
Map Design: 5
No playability problems or errors. Map design is accurate and doesnt skimp on terrain detail either. One map alone would be a 5. So good job.
Story/Instructions: 4
I remember someone telling me that you are supposed to have 2 full pages of story to get a 5. Where is the two full pages? Buy the book, otherwise this map gives enough for a 4.
Additional Comments:
"Thumbs Up". Way up for this must download, LOTR fan or not these are awesome.

I downloaded this map to play with my brother. My brother is the kind of player (like most of us..me included) that ends up just building the biggest army ever and is no fun to play against.
This map is AWESOME in that it allows both of us to use strictly strategy. I was meaning to ask you, Do you typically play this map w/ a NO TROOP BUILDING rule?
My brother and I play that way... no troop building whatsoever. We have learned a few strategies (like getting your engineers into the seige equipt to bring 'em home without getting killed) but it seems that the defender is still at the mercy of the attacker.
I was wondering if you could share some deffending strategies that would help us balance out the game.
do you also play NO TRAPS ? ? because currently thats the only way we can get the defender to win. Once again. GREAT MAP!! provides us with tons of entertainment and it's nice to be able to play a game of SH in less than an hour!
Please let me know about any defender strategies and whether you are ment to play it w/ NO troop building or trap setting.
Thanks.
-Josh!

Playability: 5
(An extremely fun map with very good replay value. There are many different strategy possibilities which make every game slightly different.)
Balance: 4
(On both maps I found it unbalanced in favor of the attacker, it does add a bit more to the replay value knowing that the defender has the harder job. I would have liked to have had crossbow men as a defender. The one little thing that bugged me was that on the Helms Deep map I can't seem to get all of my knights near the castle without them killing off the green guys (i am guessing future allies))
Creativity: 5
(Very creative. I loved the troop placement, it made for some instant combat and pulls you right into the action)
Map Design: 4.5
(I can tell a lot of thought went into this map and all of its details)
Story/Instructions: 4.5
(I was unclear about whether troop building or trap setting was allowed, but I now know that it was left up to us (the players) to decide the rules)
Additional Comments:
Thanks for such a great map... my brother and I are working on beating this one dead. I love maps that allow you to play without building troops, it's very hard for me to find these kinds of maps here, especially ones on this level! Great job.
