The boys immediately took a liking to each other. It was as if they instinctively recognized the ambitions they shared, a slumbering force that would someday steer their very lives. It was an unusual friendship, for the boys did not live in the same village. One of them had an exploring spirit and would often follow the traders out of his village, to see where the road led, or trek through the wilderness. For some reason this never got him hurt more than the occasional bruise. One of these wanderings led him to a nearby village where he met Askald, son of the village head. The first years of their friendship were filled with many games and chores, mostly in the longhouse of either village, for the winters were long and cold. As they grew up it soon became clear they each had a remarkable talent...
The readme contains the rest of this story, as well as a ballad, a letter and a limerick.
The minimap looks weird because I used tricks invloving lots of rocks, in the map itself this looks like sea and snow. This is a so called eco-vasion map, you will have to gather goods and at the same time fight off invading forces. The length of this scenario is 19 years. This map is the first in a two part campaign. The second map will be uploaded within the next two weeks. Allright that's it, have fun! :)
(Edit: I have updated the readme file with some minor refinements) |

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like the look of it, even of the strange minimap. And I know what you mean Brandonlavoie, I'm at my parents for a few days and took my latest map with me to work on. But forgot the SH1 cd! :( |

Sirwoodman, you just made my day! Thanks for taking the time to post a review, and letting me know you liked it. I'm currently playtesting part II and getting a very positive review is a good way to stay motivated. ;) |

Playability: 5
I loved it, fun to play.
Balance: 4
Good battles. Like I said in my other review's, It wasn't too easy or too hard. The reason I didn't give it a 5 was because I'm the kind of person who loves battles that you sometimes barely win, and doesn't like one where its too easy to win. Your map was a balance between the two.
Creativity: 5
For this, and map design, if I could give it a higher score, I would. This is an awesome map, not only to play, but just to look at! I have never seen a winter map for Stronghold. Quite cool.
Map Design: 6
I know the max is 5, but I'm at least saying 6.
Story/Instructions: 5
Ok, so I just recently found the readme file the stories were on and have changed my rating, sorry for the confusion.........and the instructions were clear.
Additional Comments:
Sorry for the mixup, but my stupid inability to find the longer stories affected my review. Other than that, one question, when's the sequel? P.S. No one asked you, Jasper Tudor![Edited on 02/11/06 @ 11:26 AM]

Lord KArpathea, are you sure about these scores? For playability and balance your comments indicate they are perfect but the scores don't reflect that. As for story, that is dissapointing, I took the effort of writing three different stories(four including epilogue) and another 20 pages of historic information and notes, this took me well over 20 hours to make, and you deem it worthy of a single sentence and a 3 which stands for, literally: "3.0 – AVERAGE
A good scenario, no glaring problems, but there are still plenty of things that can be improved in that category."
Please tell me what.
I'm sorry to bug you about it but I have spent about 150 hours trying to perfect every aspect of this map. Now if you don't like certain aspects of it or at least think there are things that need improvement then please at least take the time to motivate your scores properly or motivate what can be improved.

Err...to be honest, i think that Lord Karpathea's review is a violation against the rules, not only because what Lord Ako mentioned, but also because I can't understand how someone could give this anything lower than 5.0. I think too few really pay respect and understand for/to the hard work some designers put down on their maps. Myself, I gladly admit Lord Ako's complete superiority in map designing.
This is one hell of a map, Lord Ako! The playability was real good all the way through, the few calm periods were really needed, 'cause those darn wolves kept slaughtering my men whenever there were no invasions. The invasions were nicelty timed and balanced (I've learnt quite a lot about map making from this map), and the eco-goals tough too reach. Perhaps the map was somewhat too tough for me, but I can't see any reason to lower the balance-score, since I'm not a very skilled player, and others should find this map very nicely balanced.
The creativity and map design is where the map shines the most. The map design is fantastic, it resembles a perfect winter-landscape, with the grass being brown and all. And it's actually very true to the scandinavian landscape, except for the pines (despite what most people seem to think, the trees up north were mostly oak and other deciduous (did I get ir right?)), but then again, if so, the trees would have been dead, and thus not available to chop down. Anyway, great landscape! I'm not really in to cities/towns, but you've done a great work in recreating a 8th-11th century settlement, the wooden walkways are nice, and overall this must have taken ages to complete. And that sure pays off in the end.
The creaitivty is...beyond words? Wooden walkways, multiple keeps, custom cowfarm-fences, the marsh on high plain and, most of all, the incredible longboat! I could waste a few pages with positive feedback about that boat, but to save some space, I'll try to resist (if you want, I'll send you and e-mail =P).
The story is well-worked on, it is indeed well-written, gives a clear setting of what is happening and gets you really involved in the gameplay. Except for the storyline, there's also LOTS of facts, I admit I didn't read it all (I consider myself to know a thing or two about vikings already =P), but it should be a nice summary of everything they might teach you in school, and probably more.
Anyway, in summaery: Great map, Lord Ako! I don't know who, but someone wrote a certain comment to Sulis's Secrets of Sylvandell Ch. 5, and I'd like to quote him/her:
