This is a historically accurate rendition of the greatest (and equally most impregnable) castle ever concieved: Krak des Chevalies. While the terrain is, well, green instead of tan, the castle itself is about as accurate as one can make it, without leaving the bounds of a computer screen.
This file contains two seperate maps, one with the castle already built (just the Keep, walls, and a bridge and a few archers I used as "test subjects"), and the other with absolutely nothing man-made on it (except for the bridge). Thus, you have your pick: start with (almost) everything in place, or begin from scratch.
Some of you may be thinking, "Why isn't this map an Invasion or a Seige?" Well, over the years I've noticed that I get really irritated when (playing an invasion scenario) I've built a magnificient castle that's taken ages to build. And finally, once I've finished my "masterpiece," the game ends. Very, very irritating, wouldn't you agree? Also, I wanted (you) to have control over what happens during the course of your game: to control how big you want your invasions, and to control when they happen. Thus, this map is a freebuild.
As always, I would very much appreciate ratings/reviews on my maps. These will serve to help me improve on what I create in the Map Editor.
Enjoy!
UPDATE (January 16, 2006):
The issue with the stockpile has been fixed in this version. My apologies for the flaw in the map. |

Well, I think you could get more accurate to the real castle, check out "Crac des Chevaliers (historical siege)" to see what I mean. |

*I Didn't Have Anything To Do. Yro* |

Ladies and gentlemen, my apologies. I have just recently discovered a slight problem with the map containing the completed castle: there's no stockpile, and thus, you're locked with the "Site Your Granary" option and yet you can't build the granary without wood, which you cannot get without a stockpile (and "conviently" you're not allowed to place one without the granary).
For the immediate future, a simple fix is to go into the editor and add the stockpile in yourself. However, this will not be the case for more than a few hours after this post: I will update the file with the corrections, and anything else I decide needs to be added in.
Again, my apologies for the flaw in the map.
(a few side notes to the previous posters):
Yro, I took German for three years (one in middle school, two in high school), and yet, I can hardly read a word of that!
Tudor, I see what you mean. The siege version of this map is indeed more accurate. In the updated version of this map (which will be submitted to the site in an hour or so), I'll see what I can do about fixing any inaccuracies (of course, I have no intention of copying Guss370's map -- that would be quite... dishonorable, among other things... wouldn't you agree?). |

I don't know who Guss370 is, I ment Velerefontis's map. Anyway, there has been a LOT of attempts to recreate Crac des Chevaliers, and what almost all players fail at is making the castle rectangular. It should actually be rather easy to recreate the castle correclty, just find a ground plan of the castle, print it, and have it right next to you while you design. |

Oh, sorry. I had assumed you meant a Stronghod 1 version of Krak, not a Crusader one. Thus, when I did a search, I skipped over all of the ones that were under the Crusader section. NOW I see what you mean by historical accuracy. And, I must admit, Guss370's wasn't as historically accurate as I was led to believe -- I had to cross-reference the layout of his version of the castle to various images and layouts on the web and the few books I own on Medieval architecture, and they didn't match.
Indeed, Velerefontis did an exceptional job in reconstructing the castle. Perhaps in the (near) future I will attempt a complete remake (again, it will not be an attempt to copy Velerefontis' castle. I absolutely hate it when people copy other's work and pass it as their own!).
In retrospect, I think my biggest mistake was that the bridge (which in every picture you might see of Krak) resembles a Roman aquaduct, is on the wrong side of the castle, and likewise for the viaduct that drains into the castle's sisterns.
Oops.
And I too am surprised that the retangular shape would be hard to do. I mean, if you're building a castle on flat terrain (for example), then almost always the castle will be in a rectangular shape. This doesn't apply if you're trying to conform to the terrain (like trying to build on a hill), but still Krak sits on top of a mesa-like, rectangular hill, and the castle resembles the shape of the hill. Put the two together, and the castle should be a rectangle![Edited on 01/17/06 @ 08:55 PM]
