"Sire the King has asked me to inform you that the present state of our defenses...ahem...primarily in your county,...are unacceptable. He has asked that I inform you that a meager wooden barricade will not suffice against such a determined and powerful enemy,...as is Lord Kalgarth." Lord Greystones eyes glare intensely at the nervous scout as if to hold back the words he wishes not to hear, and calmly but doggedly replies,..."This fortress WILL hold. Return and tell his...Majesty that he is wrong about me and my fortress...my men are well trained and have courage...and this position will stand! Kalgarth has numbers on his side, but we have position and will NOT be budged! Now off with you,...I've got business to tend to... |

This map and scenario utilize strategy and tactics and since it portrays the defense of a wooden motte and bailey type fortification, "eye candy" is kept to a minimum. Gameplay was given priority. |

This was a very good challenge even at the easier level that I tend to play at. I found the playability of this map close to even whether I was attacking or defending. Bravo.
I would say balance and playability are covered in my first comments.
I really found the castle layout to be unique. It is not often you see a good wooden castle and your creative touch provided a nice looking structure.
The map itself, although there was nothing real special about it, I did notice that you show a great deal of attention to detail. The land was nicely smoothed out even with the hills and terrain involved. A great looking map in the thumbnail view as well.
The storyline included in the game was also enjoyable. Nicely done well balanced siege.
Keep it up :) |

Nice map! The whole thing is well put together, looks great, feels great etc...
Playablity: Defending is MUCH better, as obviosly this is a defense based scenario. I ended up with my lord at just a bit of health. Pitch helped every lil bit! As an attacker, it was a bit easy... the AI didnt stand up to much, and I walked away with almost no losses *10%* Use of a battering ram is also beautiful. Also:Defending requres you to destroy the Gibbet and Gallows right away, so your not on the disadvantage...

Balance:Same as above, attacking has too much advantage. Loop holes in fortifcations and less offense would have balanced this a bit better. from 80% to 10% there is a bit of inbalance but still worthy of an above average rating!

Creativity: The map looks amaizing. The various paths look spectacular, the castle looks as the description says. REALLY nice. Also, pitch and killingpits are postioned accordingly. A wow map. Needless to say, you can see the time put in here.
(+10)
Story: Ahh the dreaded story... I really find these so hard to rate, but this one actully shows some plot, and you do want to keep reading, or rather, start playing. I like it, but it pales to the dramatic landscapes. Sorry there sd

Playability: Great fun, this map. I had a few attempts at both attacking and defending on different levels of difficulty, but I am reviewing this based on playing on hard, as requested in the notes. Smooth map play and has some longevity here. Pretty faultless, i'd say.
Balance: Almost perfect on hard and very hard, it's a map that is winnable but you can't be naive in your approach. I'm torn between giving this a 5 or sticking to a 4, because there are defensive frailties in the castle, but this ties in with the story.... oh, 4 is still a good mark to get! A challenge from start to finish. And I agree with the comment about only having a shield or a battering ram, it makes a nice change.
Creativity: Simple, but very good. Tied to the story, is just seems to work. This strikes me as a basic(ish) map, but this is not a criticism, more a reaffirmation that maps don't need to be over-dramatic or over-produced to be fun, playable and interesting. These sort of maps can be done so wrong, and it's great to play something that just... works!
Map Design: Stunning use of the terrain to produce a very realistic looking landscape. Not over-produced again. One of the better designs I have seen. Great castle, again agreeing with previous comments. Faultless.
Story/Instructions: Different, and I like it. A bit of dry humour in there! Nothing bad at all with what is there by way of story and the notes that accompany the download are essential reading, if only to ensure you play the map how the author intended.
Splendid map, Sir Deacon! Everyone should have a go at this! |
