Ancient Oak I&II

Author File Description
Lord Ako
File Details
Map Size: 400x400 (Large)
Difficulty: Hard
Minimap:
The Barbarian warlord Alaric is traveling home with Romans hot on his tail, bearing bows and ale for his king. Only to find his home changed and the world as well, a new enemy advances from the east, too mighty to defeat. There's no other option than to prepare to journey southward, to the safety of the banks of the river Danube.

Objectives: (normal difficulty)
*Aquire 500 ale.
*Aquire 1000 bread.

This map spans for roughly 20 gameyears and you'll have to defend your hillfort from Roman and Barbarian invasions while simultanuously gathering the goods needed to win. I haven't been able to beat the map at very hard but have playtested it at hard. Please play and rate the map at a difficulty setting appropriate to your skill level. Should you decide to review this map, please only rate part II. I have included an updated version of part I but this is only for the convenience of those that want to (re)play it.

Slimmyjimmy Playability: 4
The playability was very nice. I thought the player should arrange the troops. Other then that very nice.
Balance: 5
You didn't put to many troops which is good and the attacking force isn't to bad

Creativity: 5
I would've never thought of this creative map. Very nice.

@lord vader1: you can download a map pack by Jalis over at www.stronghold-knights.com that includes seven different colored template maps with apple trees and 7 cedes. That site also has an article on how to use a hex editor to change the colors yourself, this is how I made the attacking force green.

@Slimmyjimmy: thanks for the review and especially your comment about the story, but I want to clear two things up. First of all, what do you mean by 'the player should arrange the troops'? If you mean that I shouldn't have pre-placed any troops keep in mind that you traveled home with a group of men and that this is the visigoth capital. Second, you suggest that I should have placed more resources. Stone is out of the question because you can't build churches and the visigoths did not build stone castles. I decided against pitch as well, because the pathways leading to the gates are narrow and pitch would unbalance the game. That leaves trees. There are more trees than you'll ever need and the idea was to not turn the whole map into a big forest but have these barren hills with snow set the mood. If you think this map can be improved I can accept that, but the argumentation behind some of the scores could use some more thought if you leave it as it is.

@Dark NeRo: I have started writing the story for The Viking Raid III and am playstesting it simultanuously. What slows things down is the difficult siege at the start I have to play over and over. From the end of this week I'll have a week off from school so I hope to release it during that week. Seven Saints is on hold for now and I don't know when I'll be able to upload that one. I have also begun working on a 4 part series featuring a motte and bailey castle, mapdesign is going well so far.
Dark NeRo Sounds intresting lord Ako.
If you need some help for your Viking Raid III map or any other map you can sent it over

I used the 'magic eraser' to delete the centre from a large tower with a ballista or mangonel on top. After that I deleted the tower, ending up with only the ballista or mangonel. :)

Wow, great fun here! The start of the map caught me up by surprise with those attacking mangonels and was a blast! The small keep was very interesting to defend with some key weak points. I ran out of wolod on a couple ocasions but that`s mainly my fault, not the map. And heck you need a big granary to store all that bread! The 4 is mainly due to it not being a noob-friendly map (and that`s hardly a problem ;) )

Balance: 5
Very nice, I could beat the map on Normal after a second trial. I`m not a very experienced player (especially after reading Bernard Cornwell`s Archer series, I trusted too much on my archers). The game escalated well and kept me busy all the times, very good.

Creativity: 5
You truly deserve a 10+ here. The keep with those earth mounds in front is just brilliant, and the king`s personal guard is just awesome. I`m truly inspired by your work.

Map Design: 5
What can I say, also a 10+. Every aspect of the map is very clearly thought out and brilliantly executed. Use of advanced building tools that I have no idea of how to reproduce (magic erasers? Snow? And I though I was good :P )

Story/Instructions: 5
I`m sorry I didin`t read the whole thing, but rather parafrased (is that a word in english?). The maps are well documented and the text is well executed as far as I can tell.

Additional Comments:
The part I is really awesome as well, I didin`t play it yet, but it sure looks interesting. Took me a while to actually realise that was a giant tree stump, definatelly cool.
arhurt Oh, and what Slimmyjimmy said about "I thought the player should arrange the troops." might be about something that took me by surprize as well. The maceman around the keep, you can`t control them. I was counting on them at one time to counter an attack that breached my walls and then later realized they were all rebels and where not following my orders!
