The King paced about his tent on the Southern Front. The situation was indeed, grave. The Imperial army could not hold out much longer – the only way would be to fortify with trenches and stakes several miles behind the entire Western Kingdom and Tyrant’s empire’s borders. Not that his generals had already thought of that plan, but the only reason prohibiting its use was its impracticability. He was only buying time, wasted time if the kingdoms behind him were not mobilizing their forces. Messengers had been sent to all the Capitols, but they would not arrive for another month, and for the reply to be received, another month and a half. The time to act was now.
Studying carefully a map of the Kingdom, he scanned the few major cities left under the crown’s control, or at least partially. His finger landed on the fortified port city of Karnor, by the sea.
“Aha.” He smiled a grim smile. A hope remained, a small chance of escape. Even if the Kingdom’s navies were already outdated, there was still a hope. A possibility remained, of reaching out to the Northern republics for help.
“Captain, come here.”
“Yes, my Lord?”
“How many men are left in your regiment?”
“Not much more than sixty-score, sire. I started the war with twice that, but they were all killed or wounded. Also, I have two dozen engineers left, they may be of use.”
“Good. Force march with all speed to the port city of Karnor. There is no time to lose. I give you full authority over the people in the city’s estate. Once you reach the city, drive out the local warlords and bandits, there is a warship there, one of the largest under our control. Restock it with provisions, and keep it ready for sailing at a moment’s notice. DO NOT lose control of the city.”
Upon arrival, the Captain scanned the situation. The King was right, and wrong. Karnor had been under the crown’s control, but now, a local warlord had taken control of it, and manned it with only a partial garrison. As he (you!) planned for the difficult oncoming siege, he had doubts. The local warlord, nicknamed the “Boar”, might just come with siege forces to try to take it back. Even the Tyrant, the Wolf himself will join in, in case he finds out the strategic value of this city.
The cold winds reminded him of his more pressing problems. Winter had fallen, and the lowlands were somewhat covered in snow. The sun had melted it all on the higher rocks.
His siege engineers constructed some portable shields, rams, and rebuilt a siege tower. A scout rode up, and stopped.
“They’re coming! Armed men with maces along with at least a dozen knights, they’re coming to smash the siege weapons!”
The battle for Karnor had started.
“Boar, I am counting on you. Take and keep the city of Karnor. DO NOT allow the enemy to reach the docks, even if you are under siege. If you fail, I will come after you myself.”
“The’ – ll neva’ git thea. Moi men ‘ull crack ther’ bones ‘un eat ‘em for suppa’.”
“That had better happen, I have sent reinforcements.”

1. There is one known bug – if the first Pig’s army arrives before you take the city, it may be ceded. If that happens, treat it as if you’ve lost the assault.
2. You have about 9 years in which you must take the city. Inexperienced players should play on easy, better players should play on normal, veterans looking for a really tough nut should play on hard or very hard, though victory on very hard is almost impossible.
