The Pilgrims' Progress

Map No.6 in The Saviour of Léugìm Community Campaign.

Protect a group of defenceless pilgrims as they visit holy sites in Monument Valley. Lord Dayon's murderous, evil forces lie in wait.

This not your usual invasion map. You have no economy to worry about. It is purely a miltary and puzzle challenge.

Your force is small. The enemy is strong. You cannot win by brute force alone...


You, Gregory are on your way to speak with Ithélâ, the ice god. You and your small force come across a group of pilgrims on a pilgrimage to Monument Valley. You agree to escort them in return for information about the best route to the Ice god's fortress.

The pilgrims tell you that the town in Monument Valley was founded, long go, by descendants of Ithélâ himself. They were ordered to make the monument and the shrines in the valley. They were also ordered to spread word to the towns nearby that the people had to show their faith to Ithélâ by visiting these shrines. The town is protected by Älkron, the legendary, immortal, knight. He stands at the entrance of the town, and has been there for centuries. For as long as they can remember the pilgrims have come to visit and pray at the Monument and the shrines. And so it was for their fathers, and their fathers' fathers, and their father's fathers' fathers. But this time Lord Dayon's murdeous, evil, forces lie in wait. It is up to you, Gregory, to protect the innocent and defend the defenceless...

  1. Get your troops moving IMMEDIATELY!
  2. Keep as many of the pilgrim group alive as you can. Lose too many and you face defeat at the end.
  3. You have no economy to worry about.
  4. Other peasants may appear at the Monument. However they will not contribute to any victory because Lord Dayon's men will eventually seek them out and murder them. The Monument is indefensible. You cannot defend it nor should you try to. Do not think of it as your keep. It is just a monument. You have no keep on this map. The pilgrim group is what you are pledged to protect.
  5. You are not just responsible for the safety of the pilgrims. You must take a hand in guiding them on the safest possible route. You can influence the route they take. How? That would be telling...
  6. With the instructions in the zip you will find details of the pilgrims' planned route along with a graphic showing the route.
  7. There is a sequence of hints files in the zip to help if you get stuck.


On Normal setting, at least 10 of the original pilgrims must be alive when time runs out, otherwise you lose.

On Very Hard setting you cannot afford to lose a single pilgrim.

With the instructions in the zip you find details of the pilgrims' planned route along with a graphic showing the route.

Armed with the knowledge of where the pilgrims will go next you can be pro-active...

Authors' Notes

This not your usual invasion map. It is more of a puzzle map. Until you figure out how to win it is impossible. Once you have figured out how to win it is quite easy. So we have classified the map as Hard to reflect this impossible/easy dicotomy.

This screnario was designed by both Sir Ravenclaw and myself (ericgolf). So it was decided to submit it as by The Suicide Squad. In the Zip you will find a more extensive authors' notes about the creating of the scenario.

This map may well drive you crazy. I hope you enjoy it and win in the end. Please leave comments to say how you get on. Cheers, Ericgolf :-)

Hypernova90 Ok tnx for the tip. If it's so much work then i think i will let it pass by. I thought it would be that easy to explain :P It's not that i was planning to submit a map anyway ( I'm just beginning with mapmaking and love the tricks you guys use in all those maps )

But the map! OMG this is the most creative maps i've seen till now! The citizens who walk the way between the keep and the statues! And the enemy's who are hidden and ambush my little army and the citizens. I even didn't see some enemies if i flattened the map ( AWESOME! )And last the invasion that killed my citizens ! GREAT! They took the mountain pass and slaughtered everyone :D I haven't been able to complete this map but this is way more fun then all those invasions because of the creativity ! I just wanted to say really great job and i'll hope to write a review soon.
Hypernova, Glad you enjoyed/are enjoying the map :) The invisible troops are Sir Ravenclaw's handywork. Sneaky aren't they ;)
Don't forget that the Zip contains hints files to help you to victory if you get stuck

About how to make the panoramic: It is screenshots pasted into a graphics program, matched up at the edges and saved as a jpg. The reason I was suggesting you ask in the forums was maybe someone there will know of a link to a more explanatory tutorial to show how to do it. The forums are very good for that. You can ask anything about stronghold and there will be someone around who can help out with an answer or advice. And we are always glad to see new people in there :)

Playability: 5
This map is so much fun! This is one of a kind in a very good way. This isn't like most maps where you will have to fight huge invasions. Instead you must puzzle and see how you can beat the map. This makes it so much more fun! It is good to see that Stronghold can actually suprise people after such a long time.

Balance: 5
Well it took me 7 tries to beat. I just didn't want to read the hints so i didn't know where the peasents went of to. Even sometimes i did see where the peasents went and flattened the map to see if there were any enemy units and i didn't notice them they came out of the invisible and killed some peasents, great! It is overall very balanced.

Creativity: 5
As i said before this is a one of a kind map! I can't explain in words how much i enjoyed the creativity of this map. It is just unbelievable! I liked the last invasions rushing trough the mountains towards "the monument" and slaughterd everyone!

Map Design: 5
The map design is really great, with no ugly points and overall very very smooth! It's one of the best looking Stronghold maps.

Story/Instructions: 5
Well the story fits in the map very well. Well done! The story isn't as normal as most maps, where King X fights against King Y and set up huge invasions forces. No, the story is as creative as the map itself and is well written.

Additional Comments:
I want to cry! This is by far the most creative, coolest, best, suprising, amazing... wait i'll stop, JUST DOWNLOAD THIS MAP!!! I can't explain it in words, just play it yourselfs and enjoy!

I am glad you liked the final invasions plunging through the hymalayan mountain passages. I spent ages on that aspect of the map. And did you notice Sir Ravenclaw's invisible signpost?... (Silly me. How could you have?)

Playability: 5
It is just amazing, this map turns Stronghold into a Real Time Tactics game, the idea is brilliant, i think it is the first stronghold map that I played that focuses on tactics a lot more than on brute force and numerous troops.

Balance: 5
It took me 4 tries to complete the map on Normal difficulty, the balance is very good, because you have just enough men to protect the peasants, if you know how to use them [that is the troops, not the peasants].

Creativity: 5
The idea of the ambushing troops appearing out of nowhere and attacking your troops is just brilliant. It is a truly unique map.

Map Design: 5
The map is beautiful, I like the way you made the river, it looks very realistic. Also, the village is very nice, I guess that maceman and the spearman are defending some kind of a mine. I suppose you magically deleted the building of the farm, because I saw that the farmers were picking up hops and wheat. The terrain of the map is also wonderful.

Story/Instructions: 5
The idea of the pilgrimage is very original, and escorting them for information is brilliant. Also, the instructions are very detailed.

Additional Comments:
This is the map that made me reinstall Stronghold and work a little more with the map editor.

Lord William1234 Sir Ravenclaw and Ericgolf, tell me if I'm wrong, but I think I have a possible answer to how you got the peasants to move from place to place...I think it had to do with the controllable peasant trick, and rally points. You get the look that the peasants are paying homage to the shrine because the controllable peasants bow when they stop, and then head right back to the keep. If this is how you did this, then please tell me, if not, please tell me. (I just found out how to do the controllable peasant trick, and I figured that that is how you got the peasants to behave in the way that they did). Not sure how you got the peasants to go to the monument and then to the shrine, though.
