URQUHART CASTLE – 1303
In 1303, King Edward I of England ‘Hammer of the Scots’ began his second march into Moray. Sir Alexander de Forbes led the Scottish defense from within the castle walls. Urquhart Castle was the only thing standing in the way of total domination of the Great Glen. The Scottish garrison surrendered the castle only after a long hard fought battle. Will you be able to change history and hold off the English invaders?
Urquhart Castle is situated on a promontory jutting into Loch Ness and was an ideal site for a fortified residence. For over a thousand years, the site served as a fortified residence, military barracks, hotel, court, administrative center and seat of power. The surrounding fertile lands and waters provided an abundant supply of crops, fish fuel and game. It is surrounded on three sides by the Loch leaving only one side of the castle vulnerable to attack. The landward side of the castle was defended by a dry moat 5m deep and 30m across at its widest point. A stone cause way with a draw bridge spanned the moat. The castle is an hour-glass shaped double bailey with a large gatehouse defended by two towers. The castle also has a magnificent five storey tower-house or keep located at the northern most end of the castle.
In 1509, King James IV of Scotland sent these orders to the constable of the castle; “to repair or build at the castle a tower, with an outwork or rampart of stone and lime, for protecting the lands of the people from the inroads of thieves and malefactors; to construct within the castle a hall, chamber and kitchen, with all the requisite offices, such as a pantry, bakehouse, brewhouse, oxhouse, kiln, cot, dove grove and orchard, with the necessary wooden fences"
Urquhart has been fought over and changed hands many times during its turbulent history. Today, it is one of the most visited historic sites in Scotland. Visitors can gaze at the rugged landscape, take in views of the spectacular lake, stand atop the ruins of the castle, and if you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of NESSIE.
***PLAYER NOTES***
This is a Stronghold Siege scenario designed to be played as the DEFENDER. I playtest all of my scenarios on normal setting so if you feel frisky, play on hard or very hard settings. (The scenario will not work if you play as the attacker.)
As always, I hope you have as much fun playing this scenario as I have had creating it.
Sincerely,
DoY

Nice work with the castle, but may I ask why is there that arrow in the water? Does it have any purpose or it just helped you when making the map and you forgot to remove it? It's very ugly... : )[Edited on 06/30/08 @ 07:59 PM]

The arrow on the map points North. I felt it important to orient players to the proper direction. [Edited on 06/30/08 @ 08:28 PM]

Well, that's why when you click the right button, a compass appears. I also think the arrow is ugly and not useful, since we have a compass. When we exclude it, everything's fine like every DoY's map. |

Sorry you do not approve of my 'ugly' direction arrow on the map. As a historic castle, I felt it important for the player to know which way is true North. It does not affect game play at all - you only see it on the mini-map. Managing the defense of the castle should take up enough of your time that you will not even see the direction arrow down there in the lower corner of the map. It is in the middle of the lake which has no bearing on on game play. |

I think it is good to know which way is North in reality on a historical map. |

Right, this is the first Review i've ever done so sorry if it appears harsh!
Playability: 4
The map is very playable and fun, I like how you have to direct all of your troops to certain places on the wall to prevent enemies from breaking in, this kept me on the edge of my seat. There were very few troops which made it quite a challenge, I've seen maps where the player has a vast amount of troops against a titsy army. I did encounter a few problems when playing the map, one of these is that when played on hard the siege engines attack but the troops don't, and when played on Very hard the troops attack but the siege engines don't, I dunno if this is just me or if everyone has encountered the problem, the only setting i could get it to work on was Normal, it's fine, just a bit annoying having to quit the game to find the appropriate setting.
Balance: 4.5
I loved the balance, the fact that you have very few trrops against a large army is great, very challenging, it's very fair aswell, mainly because the enemy army consists of weak troops (Spearmen, Archers etc.) Whislt your defending army consists of the more stronger troops, (crossbow men, swordsmen etc.) I think it was very good, well done on this one. x]
Creativity: 5
Well, i've never really seen a map based around Scotland and Loch Ness (It is Loch Ness right?), I think it was a very original idea, and it paied off! 5/5 for this one!
Map Design: 5
The map design was brilliant, I loved the wooden stockade bits on the walls, it worked beautifuly and made the castle look a lot better! the causeway going up to the castle was very good too! I loved that. The big bank thing was very good too, it was a bit plain but O'well, I think it's meant to be like that, anyway, the terrain outside of the castle makes up for that, trees,, iron, rocks, it gives the map a very... Scottish feel somehow. I liked how you made the castle seem authentic, by making fully functioning kitchens, etc, and having all the little worker men run around, it looked brilliant!
Story/Instructions: 4
I don't know what to write on this really. I mean, you had an accurate story and castle history, this was very good, as for instructions? It didn't need them, it was a siege map! I think the part saying how this is intended to be a defender map counts as instructions, nevertheless i'll give you a 4 on this one, because you had a long story in it, maps, pictures and a very good looking siege. Good job! xD
Additional Comments:
I enjoyed the map, although i'm still yet to win!!! Maybe it's the map or i'm just sucky at playing! X_X
