Hi, this is my first map. I made some practice maps before, but I think this one deserves to be shared. It took me about one week. I'm planning to make several versions of this castle, to perfect it, so you reviews are more than welcome.
Story in the map. I just want to mention that the real cathar stronghold was completely destroyed after the siege and the surrender of the castle. It's presumed to have been a small forified village of about 500 people. The enemy army was about 10.000, so you are a little overwhelmed :)I used the ruins that remain today for the map. Quote from wikipedia: "The present fortress ruin at Montségur is not from the Cathar era. The original Cathar fortress of Montségur was entirely pulled down by the victorious royal French forces after its capture in 1244. It was gradually rebuilt and upgraded over the next three centuries by royal forces. The current ruin so dramatically occupying the site, and featured in illustrations, is referred to by French archeologists as "Montsegur III" and is typical of post-medieval royal French defensive architecture of the 1600s. It is not "Montsegur II," the structure in which the Cathars lived and were besieged and of which no trace remains today."
The siege of ten months lasts about ten years in the game, to give it the proper temporal dimension.
I will update soon. I'm from Chile, South America, so I apologize for any error in my english.
Enjoy! |

Despite I'm a Crusader designer, I must admit that your design looks really nice, especially the river curves, it looks very natural! What is more, hills near the stream create a geographically accurate aspect of landscape formation.[Edited on 07/12/08 @ 03:16 AM]

Playability: 5
(Well what can i say? I enjoyed this scenario very much, one of the many historical maps for people to enjoy. There are a few things that i didnt like, such as troop limitations,i could've used a few more crossbow men on the walls, however my cunning use of pitch evened the odds a little-HUGE army!my archers picked off most off the enemy as it made its' way round.I shall have to replay it again and see if i can win-great job! )
Balance: 4
(I hinted in playability about balance, with a huge army attacking you it isnt balanced as you stand little chance of winning,BUT that is the whole point.I dont know of many seiges where the beseiged won.But as those who know me i enjoy a challenge.)
Creativity: 4
(As this is your first map ,based on actual events it is very good )
Map Design: 4
( A little rough round the edges, but it does portray the enviroment in which this happened, the route to the keep isnt the one you think it is,i do like the river though, again great for a first map )
Story/Instructions: 4
(The story, well it tells the reader what the scenario is about,it's explanative, and when playing the map it becomes VERY self-explanatory.As i've said before and i'll re-iterate it,the important thing is if you like to write a long or short story for your scenario is that YOU the creator enjoy writing, and you get your idea across, there are MANY maps here with a long story and many maps with a short story and all of them are good, but it does annoy me when people say critise someone for that story saying 'it's too long' or 'it's to short'-it is all down to personal choice, and i know that english isnt the first language for many people here so allowances should be made. )
Additional Comments:
Well for your first map it was great to play, and i look forward to seeing more.well done.Lastly its' good to see newcomers to the site.[Edited on 07/17/08 @ 08:00 PM]

Wow, thanks! Your review is very accurate, and very useful to improve mi efforts. One thing; I did not find any map or plan of the real access to the castle, an the way to it trough mount Pog. I just imagined how it was. Can you tell me where I can find info about it? Do you know the real route of the attack? I want to make a really accurate map, so any info is welcome.
And I'm glad you liked it. :D

Dear lachenmann, the best place to look are local libraries, and specific sites* on the internet.*one that focuses solely on castles,if i remember there are links on this very site.As for the castle i do know- (sorry i can't remember the route to the keep but your interpretation seems right)-of it and sometime ago there was a documentary on either the history channel or one of the discovery channels.hope that helps.LD [Edited on 07/17/08 @ 07:57 PM]
