Really enjoyed this mission. It was a bit tricky but really great fun. |

Wow! This scenario had so much potential...
PLAYABILITY: Here I am, working my butt off to try to rebuild the Castle and raise an army strong enough to repel the "large force" I know will be invading. After a rather lengthy time with few distractions (a fire here or there, but Jayhawk's scenarios have trained me to use wells liberally), finally an invasion comes. I hastily move some bows around as I see how the enemy is deploying and sit back and watch. The last remaining maceman manages to breach my outer ward just as he dies, allowing a few Knights to enter into my farmland, but they are mowed down by crossbows before they can do much damage to anything.
Quickly, I grab my mouse, rotate the map and begin repairing my walls when...
VICTORY!
"WHAT??? VICTORY???? SHEESH - I haven't even started fighting yet! I just spent all this time building up for... THAT?"
BALANCE: The only thing in balance in the entire scenario was food production versus food consumption. My quarries were so productive, I ended up selling more rock than a street dealer in Harlem. This surplus stone was available despite being able to completely wall in all my production except my ore mines - which I was only unable to do due to the proximity of one of the signposts.
Wood was also out of balance. From about the midway point on, I always had over 120 wood in my stockple. If I ever needed some quick cash to train newly available troops, there it was.
I was worried that my army would be too weak to defend the length of my outer walls. I was wrong. I won my first time playing with only 3% losses.
The balance problem could be improved drastically by considering the attacking force the "advance guard" and following it up shortly after it's defeat with a second, larger force. Have the advance guard attack sooner. As it stands now, there is simply too much time to build up before the enemy attacks.
Also, reduce the amount of quarries available. Even with reduced supplies of stone, I could have stayed afloat financially by selling leather armor and wood (I didn't have a whole lot of extra armor, but it fetches a fair price).
Reducing the generous amount of starting gold might help, as well.
CREATIVITY: The story was creative and, artistically, evened out the rather bland presentation of an attackng army.
MAP DESIGN: The scenario was set on a map used in a previous Usurper episode, so there was little opportunity to shine in map design. The low tide and damaged Castle was well done in spots, but continuity errors from the previous episode using this map (a lot of grass changed to sand and the rear of the Castle had way too much damage considering the previous attack came from the front and trebuchets/cats were not allowed in that assault) offset the plusses.
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: The outstanding storyline continues!
This scenario's tremendous potential was negated by overly abundant resources, too much building time, and an anti-climatic fight at the end. |

I enjoyed this map a lot. There were many aspects that made it very hard, not being able to grow wheat or hops, nor being able to trade for these items, made it very hard to balance your popularity while trying to build up enough troops. I was somewhat dissapointed with the attack that was placed upon my castle, and thought that I had WAY too much time to prepare. Less time would have made this more difficult.

What I really love is the playability of all of these maps and this was no exception. Very creative, a few minor flaes but mainly a really good fun map to play. However iot was far too easy - a few more invasions ta the end would have it better but they only breached my outer wall. However the map was very entertaing - a classic invasion of building up supplies and your army. Another minor flaw was that their walls were still up and therefore it was difficult ot build until they were destroyed. The map was very creative and I liked the main structure of the castle but the surrounding map design was not good enough for a 4. A very good story continueing this epic story and adventure - great map! |
