DIFFICULTY: Normal or hard setting. Designed to be played on both, depending on the level of skill
OBJECTIVES: Kill the enemy Lord and all troops within and around the castle
**To be played as an attacker only**
They say in these lands that whoever has access to the precious rocks will be a force to be reckoned with. This is certainly true, and the iron rich land near the coast has been exploited by a sly, cunning lord who has ambitions that would not rest easy with the King. From an early settlement and basic wooden fortification the lord has managed to build an impressive bastion, with formidable fortifications, with which to launch a deadly raid. This development has worried the King. Whilst he is unaware of the plotting within the castle walls itself, it seems that the feudal lord, every bit as petty as the other lords in the area, is willing to sacrifice the rule bestowed upon him by the King for 'greater responsibilities'.
Armed with a moderate force, you are asked to overthrow this enemy of the Crown. What lies within the castle walls is unknown. The number of troops in and around the castle is also unclear. It is with trepidation that you approach the castle, for surely the King has not provided you with a large enough force to take it?
This is an excellent map! And I will use the author’s format to review it.
Playability 4/5 this is designed as an attack map and at that it is exceptional. A little limited by the design as to how you can attack and what troop combinations will work, that aside it is a great challenge as the elaborate design of the castle (sally forth, sally back, sally port, where the heck am I???). I took this on normal difficulty on my second attempt and then on hard with 92% losses!
Balance 4/5 As this is designed as an attack map Balance will have to be based on that alone. The right combination of enemy troops, not the usual overuse of archers and bowmen and my own folly of killing pits and pitch as I see in a lot of the downloads. This map can be played as a defensive siege although not designed as one and at that it functions well (worth a play in my book.)
Creativity, Map Design both 5/5 Stunningly rendered Castle by the Sea. The amount of attention given to the surrounding landscape is second to none. Rarely is this level of skill seen at this site. The map contains an interesting village and bridge. Vestiges of long forgotten earlier fortifications, a history in the design! Not to mention optimal game play and AI performance!! This map is an extremely well done and well thought out siege.
Story/Instructions 5/5 Once again rarely does one see this level of investment in the download stories. As I only do historical sieges myself, the fact that this is a fictional creation makes it stand out even more. This is not just another kill the evil lord script. An interesting and entertaining story that really sets the tone intended for the map.
Overall a great siege map! Kind of like this authors sleeper hit as it does not get downloaded nearly as much as his other works. Well worth the time and you will probably learn something of map design in the process!
