1st Campaign - Mission 09 - Saved at the last minute
Mission briefing:
Near Schongau by the Lech River, September 1275. As the attacks of the Snake at Lake Chiemsee have become too frequent, you are set to get back on the move again. You call a meeting with your advisors and discuss the route. They recommend that you seek shelter in the extensive woodlands of the Black Forest, about a week's march away. You agree and get moving. After a three day's march, you cross the Lech River. Suddenly you notice a heavily armed black rider who follows you and has likely been sent by the Snake. Panicking, your men run back to the river just to hear even more galloping of horses. "Cross the river to the fort!", you shout to your frightened men. If you are allowed to enter, establish a base there and fortify the town, preferably by strengthening its walls. In addition, you should send all available men to dig a ditch as wide as possible.
Comments:
Stronghold is not just a game. It is one of the best and most popular strategy games of all time. I appreciate the depth of strategic thinking Stronghold requires from the player, and even more, the world editor, which allows you to design a map to the greatest level of detail and reflect nature's beauty in it.
Acknowledging the great work many authors have contributed to the Stronghold Community here, I created a set of 70 missions to conquer medieval Germany. My aim is to give you a Stronghold experience that reflects the beauty of my home country Germany and the diversity of its castles.
The complexity of this project increased with time. Initially wanting to build 20 missions, I continued to receive more ideas and felt the need to express them in the campaign. Work on this project took me a few years, with breaks included.
The missions have been grouped into five campaigns and feature dozens of real-life maps, including many original German castles that are based on their original footprint/construction plan. The missions also include fictional maps reflecting Germany's scenery.
At 'very hard' settings, most of my missions are tough but feasible. Like in the Middle Ages, you will need to build and defend your castle wisely.
I am using Stronghold 1.41. |

At the slow pace we were going, it took me by surprise to be able to have ale, bread and the market.
It was fun, easier than the previous one, I finished with plenty abundance.
Having to hold the food with only dairies and little space in the previous ones made it very complicated, in this one white and flour makes everything easier.
Also there's plenty trees on these maps, being able to sell it helps for the money, plus the ale for taxes.
Or I don't know if the map was intentioned to be played inside, but I destroyed everything after the first wave (and finally erradicated those enemy horses) and build everything outside, helped me a lot, maybe too much?, and granary and stockpile can be changed, so why not?
Still fun though ! |

Thanks. Up to you whether you keep the fort or build a new and bigger one - I think both ways work :)
As this was an existing small town that you occupy, with an existing economy, I thought it may be the right time to introduce some more goods, including bread and ale, as this would have been available in every medieval township :) |

So I have just finished this mission on very hard, took few tries, im starting to fall in love with those campaigns. Thank you for putting the time in and making this.
First wave is really really hard to defend, after that, it become kinda of easy to complete, but its only 8th level, im wondering, how hard will later levels be.
SPOILER *TIPS*
Some tips for someone, who is struggling:
1) Destroy hunting huts of the snake early on, so the hunters wont snipe your woodcutters.
2) Dig some even useless moats before the first wave, you are going to need every distraction possible.
3) Immediately in the begginning do super rations (+8), so you have enough money to drop bow production buildings (i made 8 before first wave)
4) Dont be afraid to lose your knight on the first wave, but avoid skirmishes with snake's infantry, just focus archers then run away.
5) After first wave, you have enough archers to make quick work of every other attack, so just keep adding layers of walls and you are going to be ok :)[Edited on 02/18/23 @ 09:20 AM]

Another masterpiece, sadly for me, was easier than the last mission. The map design is incredible, author puts a lot of work into these maps and I cannot be more grateful for that.
Attacks could be little bit harder on "very hard", finished this mission with over 400 archers, which made it really easy to defend, sadly the last attack hasnt even touched my walls.

Other than that, for some inexpirienced players, this map can put up some challenge and even for experienced players, its surely worth playing, that early chase by knights was an excellent idea :)
Everything worked like a clockwork, u felt like u are being chased at the beginning and trying desperately to reach the castle, would say 9/10, one point missing for the difficulty being kinda easy |

Thanks a lot for your kind feedback :)
Regarding the difficulty, I have noted that there are several bugs with the AI which unfortunately means that under certain conditions, the AI won't build siege weapons. I think this is a known bug: https://stronghold.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forum/display.cgi?action=ct&f=4,3104,420,all
Additionally, if you have several signposts on different ends of the map (which I did for this one), the AI will likely lead some of its troops across the map to another signpost just to start over from there, which means their troops get likely killed by your archers on the way there.
I have looked into these problems and I think I have a fix for them that works in most cases. The fix is to build all 8 (!) signposts on the map very close to one another and let the siege weapons attack two months later than the main army. It took me a while to figure that out. I have implemented that in most of the following maps but not in this one. It means that if your last attack (or potentially none of the attacks you experienced) built any siege weapons, it was much easier than designed. Those catapults turn the wooden palisade into rubble very fast ;)
I will include the fix in this map soon, too. [Edited on 07/20/22 @ 05:07 PM]

Excellent! Ditto to ‘blazinbullit’ and ‘Staras’. I need say no more.
I christened my hero Johann von GuterJunge, affectionately known as Johnny Bravo, JB for short.
I miss a simple sketch. A hand drawn jpg marking one’s advance to enhance a sense of continuity.
Thank you PrinceofHesse
