1st Campaign - Mission 15 - A troublesome neighbour
Mission briefing:
Chateau de Luetzelbourg/Chateau Rathsamhausen, July 1277. You will not forget that De Puce intended to burn you alive in the fiery flames of the Black Forest. There will be no further negotiations with him. Instead, you march several day's marches northwards and hear of a suitably situated couple of castles built closely together and owned by De Puce, beyond the Rhine river. When you begin the siege of Chateau de Luetzelbourg, the eastern of the two, their garrison is surprised by your presence and fails to defend the castle well. Shortly after, you are able to occupy the castle. Barricade yourselves here and conquer the other (better guarded) castle. Ensure that the constant fire from the other castle ceases. The battle has not yet come to an end when you receive bad news: A large troop of soldiers from adjacent France have gathered in the valley to come to De Puce's aid and take the castle away from you again.
Comments:
Stronghold is not just a game. It is one of the best and most popular strategy games of all time. I appreciate the depth of strategic thinking Stronghold requires from the player, and even more, the world editor, which allows you to design a map to the greatest level of detail and reflect nature's beauty in it.
Acknowledging the great work many authors have contributed to the Stronghold Community here, I created a set of 70 missions to conquer medieval Germany. My aim is to give you a Stronghold experience that reflects the beauty of my home country Germany and the diversity of its castles.
The complexity of this project increased with time. Initially wanting to build 20 missions, I continued to receive more ideas and felt the need to express them in the campaign. Work on this project took me a few years, with breaks included.
The missions have been grouped into five campaigns and feature dozens of real-life maps, including many original German castles that are based on their original footprint/construction plan. The missions also include fictional maps reflecting Germany's scenery.
At 'very hard' settings, most of my missions are tough but feasible. Like in the Middle Ages, you will need to build and defend your castle wisely.
I am using Stronghold 1.41. |

How is it possible to complete this mission? I managed to keep almost all my archers alive and kill most of the engineers before they could build their tools. But the number of enemy pikemen is so large, how can I stop them? |

Are you speaking of the first invasion of the French or of the following invasions of the Rat? :)
If about the French: Their first invasion is so strong that they will enter your castle whatever you try, the mission is designed to start rough! :). You will need to defeat the enemy from within your keep with your spearmen and pikemen.
If you're speaking of the Rat's attacks afterwards, try to fortify your castle as good as possible, maybe build a third front door, and use wooden walls if you have no stone stocks.
It will also be important to eliminate the mangonel on the enemy tower as soon as possible, at best once the French attack is over.[Edited on 06/23/22 @ 07:34 AM]

Yes, I am talking about the first French attack. Let's say I can save almost all of the starting 29 archers with the help of shieldbearers. But they cannot kill pikemen, or do I need to concentrate archers fire on one by one? Or should I try to kill most of the spearmen with archers and keep the pikemen for my own melee units? |

Ok, finally I managed to complete this mission. This was really interesting and the hardest so far. I like the creativity of this, much much greater than the original campaign. In this mission, namely, you need to think of the next 5 steps you want to do. |

Thank you!
I was trying to put more creativity into it than the original campaign, and also make the maps look nicer. I found the original campaign maps aren't really looking realistic.
The French attack is very strong and you won't manage to keep them out of your castle. They will destroy the gatehouses and try to move into your keep. You will need to gather all your troops on the top of the keep and wait until the enemy walks into your keep. Then you'll need to select all your pikemen and spearmen and send them against the enemy at once with full force. This works but it may take you a couple of attempts. [Edited on 06/23/22 @ 06:30 PM]

I found this mission quite hard on comparison to all the others so far.
The outer economy is pretty much obsolete as you are under siege most of the time and in the little periods in between, it is a constant struggle with popularity / getting any workers. Without exposing your granary by placing it on the farmland directly, which wouldn't quite fit the setting of the mission, food is a real issue. Hunters frequently run around like madmen and die to enemy archers, farms are far away and in danger of enemy troops as well for most of the time.
Also, e.g. inns can be built but with no way to obtain ale they can't be actually used.
Any sort of stable economy feels like a near-impossible struggle here.
Militarily it was doable, but tough. After a couple tries I resorted to ramming down all enemy fortifications with an unmanned ram after some of my engineers had been slain trying to man it... otherwise it would have been even harder and taken unfeasibly long to get back up economically in the end to gather enough troops for the push on the orange castle. |

Thanks for commenting! Yes, as the sieges are frequent, the outer economy is constantly threatened. When I play-tested the mission, I solved this by building a system of wooden walls around key buildings outside, but it is true that this makes succeeding in the mission take a bit longer.
For the ale, - true! That was an error, I enabled ale trade now. I usually don't use ale, so I overlooked it.
I am glad that this mission was a proper challenge for an experienced player like you, though! As stated in the comments under all of my missions, succeeding may at times require the player to use all of their skills and tricks! |

I made a tweak to the frequency of invasions now to make the mission more balanced. |

I am not the worst Stronghold player, I would say. But I cant seem to win against the French attack.
I shoot down several engineers, so less siege weapons. And when the army breaks in, I send all my melee units at the same moment to the entrance of the keep so the combined force of them fight against the incoming troops. But they are waaaay to many. When all my troops are defeated and only the Lord is there, there are still maybe 50+ enemy melee troops there.
I tried it several times.
Quess I have to skip the rest of the map or I will manipulate the amount of troops in the editor, so I can experience the rest of the mission. :(
But from an artistical perspective and the idea behind this map is great!
Edit:Finally managed to kill all enemies of the first attack, but I have only a handful left, so in my opinion this mission could be a bit less difficult ;) It doesnt fit in the general difficulty of your former missions.[Edited on 07/27/22 @ 07:57 AM]

Thanks! This map indeed appears to be a little more difficult than most of the other ones! I've also failed a few times but on other occasions, it went pretty well against the French - it seems the player needs a little bit of luck here. |
