2nd Campaign - Mission 22 - The fortress on the mountain
Mission briefing:
Auerbach Castle, March 1279. After your victory over the Snake at Frankenstein Castle, your next assignment is to conquer the Snake's Auerbach Castle a bit further down south, from where he has been coordinating his destructive attacks against Frankenstein Castle. This is one of the Snake's most strongly secured fortresses. Hence, this task is giving you some feelings of uneasiness. Additionally, the fortress must not just be captured but also held and secured. This is in Lord Frankenstein's utmost interest, and for this purpose, he will hand over to you a significant portion of the savings you helped him accumulate. Once you have occupied the castle, invest the money immediately into a powerful defence garrison. Be also prepared for Duke Truffe who will not stand back.
Comments:
Stronghold is not just a game. It is one of the best and most popular strategy games of all time. I appreciate the depth of strategic thinking Stronghold requires from the player, and even more, the world editor, which allows you to design a map to the greatest level of detail and reflect nature's beauty in it.
Acknowledging the great work many authors have contributed to the Stronghold Community here, I created a set of 70 missions to conquer medieval Germany. My aim is to give you a Stronghold experience that reflects the beauty of my home country Germany and the diversity of its castles.
The complexity of this project increased with time. Initially wanting to build 20 missions, I continued to receive more ideas and felt the need to express them in the campaign. Work on this project took me a few years, with breaks included.
The missions have been grouped into five campaigns and feature dozens of real-life maps, including many original German castles that are based on their original footprint/construction plan. The missions also include fictional maps reflecting Germany's scenery.
At 'very hard' settings, most of my missions are tough but feasible. Like in the Middle Ages, you will need to build and defend your castle wisely.
I am using Stronghold 1.41. |

Hi, im gonna try to give feedback to every mission, in order to hotfix something or for some players to consider playing this campaign. Im playing all missions on very hard, so I can only refer to that kind of settings.
First of all, this campaign is MUST play for everyone, best custom made campaign out there, frfr.
Anyways, this mission starts with sieging enemy castle, its ok in terms of difficulty, the hard part is not damaging the castle to much, in order to have easier defence later on, but with the portable shields, its not that hard to achieve that.
After obtaining castle and its buildings, you have a lot of gold to buy wood and start your eco, but depending on your losses I advise to buy some bows, because the first attack is really early on, and probably is the hardest, because you are defending both Pig and Snake. After the first wave, its your time to build large eco and spam archery ranges. You can get most profit from selling iron. Second and third wave are really easy to defend tho, you have a lot of time to build up your army to huuuuge numbers. I had over 700 archers. Overrall 9,5/10 mission. Once again, difficulty atleast early on is on point, and map design is next level, my only recommendation is to contact FireFly studio and make this an official campaign :).

Notes for the author: I would say that there is way to much time between first and third enemy attack, your are able to reach ridiculous number of units. Also I think that portable shields are the most broken units in the game, which just makes every scenario way to easy, because enemy archers literally dont exist. I would consider removing them in almost every scenario due to balance levels (but if so, the early siege of snake's castle has to be easier). Their only use can be in players seiges of AI's castles, otherwise, its just unfair unit. Also I know that your are trying to avoid the "glitch" where all enemy units regroup near other signpost. Sadly, they are still doing it in this mission and it makes defending way easier early on, when you dont have enough resourses to fortify every side of your castle, because you dont know if the attack is going to come from south/west/east and so on... now you know exactly where the enemy troops are coming from, because all the signposts are on too of themself and 1 tower is enough for your defence.
Cheers and thanks for putting your time into those missions, cannot praise it enough. |

Thanks so much for your detailed feedback! I'll implement your comment about the difficulty (i.e. the time after the first attack) into the map and upload an amended map.
I'm glad you're otherwise enjoying the maps. Though it's taking a lot of time to design and test, it's been a fun hobby. I'll do my best to provide the remaining maps asap, depending on other life commitments :D. Except for 3-4 remaining maps which I need to re-do, all maps have already been designed but still need to be play-tested.
Those AI unit glitches are an issue that has been bothering me quite a bit. Obviously, Firefly isn't going to fix them as Stronghold 1 is more than 20 years old, so I'll need to work around it. Indeed, it would be my absolute preference to have signposts in all corners of the map and initially, I've been doing that for this campaign, only to realise that AI can't handle it properly.
I've put the signposts closer together now, to avoid units marching from one signpost to another.
As mentioned somewhere else, another issue is that the AI often fails to build siege equipment. I hope my workaround by building all signposts and having the siege troops attack a couple of months later works for everyone, but if not, I'll just have to leave it as I have no other fix. Given the resources, I opted for a population of 128. I enlarged the castle and built towers. The initial attacks required some management by crises. But during the last, I could recall the peasants inside the walls for safety. The lull before the last battle made all the difference. Another great map, thanks. |
