Goodrich Castle
Siege map, by Sulis
-Play on normal difficulty, as an attacker only. This castle map has not been designed to play as a defender.
Goodrich castle in Herefordshire is sited on a high rocky spur over the right bank of the River Wye, commanding a crossing of the river. The area was known as the Welsh Marches, an area on the border of Wales and England. It is protected partly by a natural steep slope and valley, and partly by a dry moat cut out of the rock.
Goodrich was originally an early motte and bailey castle construction, but as was the case with most of these types of castles, it was relatively small and was used primarily as a military fortification. The development of Goodrich from a fortified site into a home and administrative centre can be approximately dated between 1160 and 1270 and reflects the phases of castle building and improvement that can be seen here.

Goodrich Castle, by Sulis, offers a sturdy fight in a great looking setting.
Here's what I experienced from this download, piece by piece. ... and by the way, I went against the grain to play the map as a defender (against the designers suggestion) and I found that I liked it even better that way.)
Playability: This is a flawless scenario from start to finish. I played it on easy first of all and I found that it was ... well, easy. On the hard setting I was able to get a victory but I was already prepared for what was going to be the fact of the matter on Very Hard... It was just that ...VERY HARD! and I still haven't beaten it (attacking). But as for the game's play... I haven't got complaint one. 5.0
Balance: This may be a little out of absolutely equal on the easiest setting but it sure make up for it on the hard ends of the scale. I think that you may have to decide for yourself according to your own play skills, but I found this game to be a pretty darn good challenge. 4.0
Creativity: The creative parts of this map are almost everywhere you care to look. Sulis has given us some of his best efforts here, once again. The terrain is natural looking and the castle is a marvel of tiers and towers. The attack plans that result from this combination just asks to be played out. 5.0
Map Design: This is another one of the must see Sulis maps... It's beautiful and it features an intricate castle design that is fun to look at and play. There are several levels and ground planes to consider as the enemy makes its siege on your walls. Wooden bridges and pitch fields along with a multi-gate entrance to the main body of the castle all work out to make an interesting defense. There are plenty of troops at your command and you'll need 'me because there are a host of steel wearing enemy at the door (defending)... Whew. It’s a fight. And in the setting of this map and castle it's a good looking fight all the way. 5.0
Story and instruction: I was left a little in the dark on this part. The story names several places and sites that were unfamiliar to me and so I was a little lost over some of that, and the story didn't offer any hints about how to make the game play any easier. I would like to have had a hint about how important the oilmen were in stopping the waves of pike men who were eating their way through my gates. There are only a few and they have to be used at tjust the right times. But over all, the story was good enough to get this game going for me and as a well made as this game is, it really didn't need much of a story anyhow. 4.0
My bottom line: 4.6 Don't delay...Download Today... and I suggest you play it either way! Attack or defend, it's a good one.

Playability : 5
I really liked the smooth gameplay which results from this map...it allows the AI to execute an attack perfectly...great work
Balance : 4
A tad bit too easy for me on Normal and even Hard, although it can get too tough in very hard...a slight imperfection which can be overlooked and in no way detracts from the overall beauty of this work.
Creativity : 5
A very nice map with so many little innovations to make it come to life...it includes Sulis' trademark eyecandy...the low-wall-surroungding-the-castle-with-equal-level-ground trick.
Map Design : 5
A very cool and realistic looking castle alongwith nice terrain, makes this map a pleasure to look at. It really is a well crafted and good use of the terrain tools has resulted in a rugged and natural looking landscape. The castle is very well made, but my only crib is that the mangonel is too bothersome once the enemy enters your castle in the first few minutes, since it destroys your own castle walls...
Story/Instructions : 4
A decent story as is standard with Sulis' maps ;)
Overall : I loved this map, and the fact that I mistook it for aa map which shipped with the game made me like it even more! It just goes to show the professionalism in Sulis' work. A must play map. |
