Esztergon Castle is, I believe, a recreation of a historic stronghold in Hungary, IIRC. I was looking forward to testing my skills against the defences of this castle, however I couldn't help but feel rather disappointed. There are some problems with the map design which means that playability really suffers (see details below). It's an untidy map with no atmosphere and unfortunately the gaming experience wasn't particularly enjoyable. Whilst the map works as you playing attacker, it doesn't work if you defend.
Balance: 2/5
ATTACKING: Normal difficulty is the preferred difficulty level per the downloads page. I found the map to be all too easy though at this level. There are areas of the castle that are cut off and no way for you to either assault it (towers, mainly) or send in any units to destroy the buildings. I played this through on very hard setting and still won with 59% losses, quite respectable. It does work as an attacking siege, but not very well.
DEFENDING:
The map won't play if you defend the castle. The AI suffers tremendously here and stood around in groups as I picked off the units. The only way into the castle is via a moat which has to be filled in. In effect, with the castle completely cut off from the surrounding terrain, the AI is confused and won't work. I can't help but feel that this isn't necessarily an AI problem but more a case of poor map design.
The map was played attacking and defending, as no indication was given by the author regarding how this should be approached. Needs some work here, particularly remodelling the layout.
Creativity: 2/5
This could have been a commendable castle reconstruction filled with history notes, author's opinions on the design of the map and a faithful recreation of the castle. Regrettably there is nothing here that can be considered in any of those categories and with a poor map design, I can't feel happy giving a score above 2.
Map Design: 2/5
Leading on from above, to me the landscape was modelled a bit crudely and wasn't particularly pleasing to the eye. The castle design is poor, with missing sections of walls rendering one gatehouse redundant. Due to the unevenness of the terrain, movement along walls for the troops was restricted, which I didn't think was intentional. The map needs some more work on it, more detail in the landscape and modelling of the castle so it takes on an appearance of a working stronghold.
Story/Instructions: 2/5
Nothing to read in the downloads description page and only a couple of lines telling you what the map is before the game launches. No story and no instructions at all, therefore 2 score given for minimum content.
IN SUMMARY
Needs a lot of additional work done to make this both playable and enjoyable. Sorry, Lord Blackcat. I'd recommend downloading a number of siege maps and see what others have done here, as well as visiting the Scenario Design compendium for ideas and basic guidelines in map design.
